I know it is a small thing in the scheme of things, but the thing that grates is that this (gestures expansively) demonstrates that every pious word we have read from Americans about their glorious constitution, free and fearless press, separation of powers, free speech, checks and balances has
Have recently read Waxwings by Jonathan Raban, his novel published in 2003 set in 1999 Seattle.
One of the many things it captures is Beth (protagonist's wife)'s Dotcom boss sending the all lower case unpunctuated poorly typed gibberish emails that the C suite types feel empowered to send

Meanwhile, where are all the massive demos against our government's weird right wing policies? Or were the Centrist Dads For Do-Overs marches assuaging people's guilt at waiting until the referendum result before starting campaigning?

The "Britain is terrible, everywhere else works" wailing is getting a bit hairshirt FBPE ("yes, the EU will rightfully ensure the living will envy the dead on these cursed islands" ) if you ask me. Western Europe (particularly I think Germany) is looking pretty ropey post GFC.

It is indisputable that Brexit has been an economic disaster, and notable that none of its political architects have paid any price.
Brexit has caused almost twice as much damage to the UK economy than estimated by official forecasts, according to new paper from a group of experts including a senior Bank of England economist

I think it's more subtle than this, I think in most countries either
A) you know something will be shit and/or you need to bribe someone
Or
B) everything will be done by the rulebook
Whereas in this country each interaction is essentially independent of any other, you may end up dying as the NHS
A really hard thing to explain to non-Brits is our combination of chaotic incompetence in all bureaucracy and lack of genuine corruption. Anyone would naturally assume that the comical bumbling is a deliberate ploy to create bribery openings, but it isn't.

(also of course it makes it harder to take this policy seriously when it is the only thing the government claims to be doing against racism; you can't say "for this reason we must cut migration" while not regulating Twitter)

I feel dirty even engaging with this but whoever wrote this speech doesn't know what "net" means. She surely can't mean it would be better for social cohesion if more British born people left? (I suspect she means the gross flow but is so used to saying "netmigration" it feels like one word)

Randomly remembering that one of main state interventions in education during the pandemic was to come up with an algorithm which main effect was to make sure the grades/uni rights of kids from good places were adjusted back to the history of said places, and kids from bad places, can you guess?

This must be some strange meaning of the term "equality and human rights" I wasn't previously aware of.
Shot - chaser - finisher

The EHRC admits there's no way to enforce anti-trans exclusion using paperwork.

Therefore it's only possible using gender stereotypes.

Therefore they defend excluding basically anyone who might be suspected of being trans.

A recipe for utter chaos.

It's only a "spork" if its father was a spoon and its mother a fork. If it was the other way round, it's a "foon".
Similarly, if its mother was a skirt and its father was shorts, then it's not a "skort", it's a "shirt". No, hang on.

Since net migration has fallen by two-thirds in the last 12 months, if this analysis about the cause of overt racism was accurate (which is v unlikely), this government would now be seeing great progress against overt racism by overseeing the big drop in net migration since December 2023 changes
