I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

There's so much I love about this speech and I hope you read the full text when you can - it's worth it.

But I love how it paints imagination as an act of service to others and a way to resist domination.

It helped me articulate some of why I think stories are so powerful and why we NEED them.

At least 160,000 people have been granted refugee status over the past five years. It now seems they are intended to be caught by the Government’s plans to make refugees wait up to 20 years for settlement - even for those just months away from ILR

We’re used to Archconservatives trying to turn back our clocks to Victorian times, but in Trumpland they are turning back the sundial to the sixteenth century
This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

She was a “serious and diligent leader who took responsibility for decisions”.

Mahmoud has listened to same clique of senior Home Office officials who have advised for 30+ years that loud announcements of punitive policies will deter refugees from coming to UK to seek asylum.

Labour did this extensively last time. It didn’t work.

Who among the public is demanding this? Who does it appeal to? I even think the people who shout at hotels haven't asked for this. Immoral.
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.
