Former news person. Now just observing.
It always seems like “free access to information” just amounts to tech people ripping off the arts.

Their view of what should be free only extends to other people’s work product, not their own.
free access to information is a fundamental right for any civilization.

the mad dash—not unlike the gold rush of the 1800s—to consume and paywall info should concern everyone.
Court filings "show top tech firms in a frantic, sometimes clandestine race to acquire the collected works of humanity.” Books were a “crucial prize,” and they "didn’t see it as practical to gain direct permission from publishers and authors to use their work."

Feels like I’ve been in this place before: dems realize they have some power and then fumble it all at the last minute or come up with some compromise that you really really need to squint at to see it shine.
Bluesky is probably not going to like hearing this, but enequivocally, the fact Democrats have been able to get *some* concessions to split DHS and the minibus is an unequivocal W for Chuck Schumer and Democrats.

January 6 is not over. Not even close.
1/ NEW: @propublica.org has obtained a search warrant that the FBI is executing for records related to the contested 2020 election in Fulton County, Ga., which has not yet been widely shared. It’s an extraordinary document.

The oligarchs funding the police state invested early—over $4 MILLION to elect Trump and GOP allies.

Now they’re cashing in: $170 BILLION approved for DHS & ICE.

For GEO Group, CoreCivic & CSI Aviation, deportation is big business.

Single issue voter checking in. Prosecute all of these criminals. And do not let them wriggle their way out this time.
This horrific detail reminds me of what we learned of Marimar Martinez’s shooting in Chicago last year.

Charles Exum, agent who shot her, later bragged to other officers about how many shots he fired versus how many wounds she had.

“Read it. 5 shots, 7 holes,” Exum texted other agents.

They should open it up to people who grew up in wicked Irish areas. Parts of Boston have just been a little Dublin for a while now.
ireland if you open up the citizenship process to people with Irish born great grandparents, i will move there tomorrow and give you all my taxes forever.

Unacceptable @nytimes.com
The transcript is finally out. Trump’s answers are mostly incoherent and full of lies. And rather than confront him on his lies on behalf of the American people, the NYT reporters just keep asking for more. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/11/us/politics/trump-interview-transcript.html
The New York Times said it would publish the full transcript of its Trump interview, which took place on Wednesday. Now it’s Sunday. Where is it?

The hypothetical example of the tragedy of the commons is three farmers overgrazing a fourth plot that no one owns because they can’t trust each other enough to share.

It is pretty dang tragic that we can’t even follow basic human lessons when we’re staring the textbook example in the face.
NEW: As President Donald Trump’s administration pushes a pro-ranching agenda, ProPublica and High Country News investigated how public lands grazing has evolved.

Here are the biggest takeaways from our reporting.
The Biggest Takeaways From Our Investigation Into Grazing on Public Lands
Livestock grazing is allowed across 240 million acres of federal land. Our investigation revealed the subsidies propping up ranching, its impact on the environment and the politics underpinning the system.

You don’t even need to post AI at a time like this. There’s real verified video and photo evidence out there.

Honestly, swisher is a great tech journalist but tech journos in general just act different from regular journalists when they’re out of their depth.

A Black man was killed by ICE (off duty) in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve. And like Renée Good, he was an American citizen. But most people have not heard about Keith Porter.

I need y’all to realize this. Black people experience this lack of visibility all the time when it comes to being victims.

People are going to want more assertiveness and I respect that but I think the reason Walz and Frey are skeptical of pitting state and local cops against CBP/ICE is because most state and local cops sympathize with Donald Trump over their own elected leaders & communities.

Last summer, these 75 Dems voted with MAGA Republicans to "express gratitude to ICE." These corporate Democrats then called for greater state and local collaboration with ICE fascists. Most of them are running for re-election. Some for US Senate. Vote Them OUT.

This is him walking away from the crashed vehicle.

🚨NEW: Federal officers like ICE agents have been routinely prosecuted by states for violating state laws, up to and including murder, since the 1800s.
Minnesota has every ability to do this with today's killing of a motorist by an ICE agent.

I’m not seeing the same hiring for left outlets as I am seeing for conservative outlets in the job market. The left is still being outspent.

One part time job at the lever doesn’t counter the creation of several new conservative astroturf operations.
probably carefully cultivated obliviousness, since dem donors often lean centrist and don't actually want to promote media that might hold them and the wealthy accountable in any way.

God, I’m so tired of applying to jobs. I’m also tired of AI companies posting jobs for people like me to train their algorithms to replace us. It’s a real motivation killer.
