At a book fair today, I chatted briefly with a young guy in his 20s who told me he was getting into reading as an alternative to scrolling social media; that books felt cleaner somehow; and that he was thinking of getting a dumb phone. Nature is healing.

There is a trend of video game narratives where women are prominent to be overly focused on motherhood and the 'natural' nurturing urges we're all supposed to harbor. It happens even when the woman in question wears power armor and blasts aliens with a giant arm cannon.

They have told some investors that growing concerns regarding the costs and benefits of AI have prompted them to raise a lot of money now rather than wait and risk a shift in the capital markets, according to people who talked with them. Hey, what was that? What was that about “growing concerns regarding the costs and benefits of AI”? What “capital shift”? The fucking companies are telling you, to your face, that they know there’s not a sustainable business model or great use case, and you are printing it and giving it the god damn thumbs up. My son came home with a Pre-K report card; I read it and was thrilled. My husband read it and was baffled. I read it and anchored on the lines that really matter: "He excels quickly in all his math assignments and has mastered the math and reading concepts presented." My husband focused on the extra full page on "social emotional growth" commentary and looked confused the whole time. "What does any of this mean?" "Nothing," I said. "Ignore it." And then that evening we explained to our son the lesson that is going to get him through his life: "People will put up with many things if you are excellent at math. You're so good at math. We're proud of you." And that was that. There are many important posts going viral today about the tragedy of young men. Combatting the systems that seek to destroy their nature begins in the home, and it begins young. I don't care about the "social emotional growth" of my sons because I know what values we're instilling in them. Telling them what really matters begins with dad and mom. You know a country by its values. By what a country values. And it turns out that what a country values can change over time. Sometimes, though, there’s a sort of cognitive delay between the country you think you are in, and the country you’ve actually become. For example, you can keep selling yourself, to foreigners, as the country of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen, and luring busloads of tourists to Stratford-upon-Avon and Bath, and put a statue of George Orwell in front of the BBC, and imagine yourself a cultured and literate nation, which the rest of the world admires for its devotion to the written word – but if you then chronically underfund your cultural institutions, and treat your cultural workers with contempt, many people will suspect you of being full of it. And as the decades pass – and fewer and fewer Shakespeares and Austens and Orwells emerge from your little island – even more people will begin to suspect that in truth you do not value culture at all, and are in fact running a giant heritage museum in which the only cultural workers you respect are the dead ones.

i mean c’mon. the president’s best friend was the most notorious pedo in the country’s history who ran a massive child trafficking ring. every bit of circumstantial evidence we have says that trump was a participant. if this were a criminal trial we’d have enough evidence to compel a plea deal.
