Years ago as a group of parents gambled and won — we organised and a few of us chose a middle school that wasn’t the nearest. We moved it from two classes of 26-27 to three classes of 19-20. All the teachers absolutely loved them, and the kids did great.
Exactly this.
One of the old-timers at the school I used to teach at (a k-8 building) used to say that he could predict low test scores and behavior problems simply by looking at the student-teacher ratios in kindergarten.

Class sizes matter when it comes to k-12 classrooms.
Every decade, we hear "the kids can't read or write!"

Interventions that don't work are proposed. Those that do work are ignored: reducing class sizes, making kids & families feel safe at school and welcome, becoming a community resource.

When their expensive reform fails, they yell at us again.

Alice's work at Teen Vogue:

(I saw a post going around—that I can't reply to—saying her column has been deleted, but I found her words via this page.)
Her last post was about being laid off from Teen Vogue. Terrible.
Heartbroken to hear of @sfdirewolf.bsky.social ‘s transition to be a crip anscestor AND feeling so honored to have been alive in the time as this brilliant human, and gotten to learn from her.

May her memory continue to always be a blessing.

Since everyone is rightly focused on the Epstein files, now would be a good time to remind you:

Child marriage is legal in 34 states across the US. That’s almost 70% of this nation.

How about we end that?

I attended SFF cons as a teenager.

I stopped getting regularly and persistently sexually harassed at SFF cons sometime in college.

"Oh wow you look way older"

No the fuck I did not because when I WAS older these weirdos stopped.

They know what the hell they're doing.
To the two well-respected local SF/F community leaders who each told a teenage child of a friend of mine, "I can't wait for you to turn 18, I'll be waiting for you," I know your names you fucking shitty-ass pedo bastards, and I *remember*.
I see the “technically it’s ephebophelia” crowd is out today, so just a reminder that A) this is NOT a case where technically correct is the best kind of correct and B) the minute you say this, the gods dump you in the “irredeemable creeper” basket and wash their hands thoroughly after touching you.

Bad news for the environment - but also terrible news for the political environment. When the center-right allies itself with the far-right, European values become optional at best. This is European history repeating itself.

This is giving former NYT reporter confessing “I’m one of the people who knew about those NYT emails“ vibes
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.
