There’s an interview where Allen points out that Keaton’s loopy genius was such that she couldn’t deliver a joke — she’d fuck up the line reading, shift the emphasis & it fell apart. So he moved all the jokes to Alvy’s lines—“and she ended getting all the laughs”. Hope she’s studied for a long time

This purchase would be catastrophic for film and the culture. Sadly, I can see fash billionaires wanting to buy the studio responsible for SINNERS and ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER so they can break it.

It’s so fucking irritating how these people unaccountably exert power but then also demand we bless it as legitimate. You’re the ones tearing up every contract, we don’t owe you shit.

Misogynist are always punishing women. But I don’t think the film is endorsing that character’s POV at all. But sure, she naively h throws herself into so many bad situations one can’t help but feel the film is editorializing. But I dont think it is. Especially since no woman in this is doing well.

But there’s a sensational aspect to choosing to tell this story that wouldn’t exist if she’d been a bus driver or taxi driver attorney or didn’t meet the end she met. So I get how it feels a bit ick.

Maybe. I was struck by the similarity to what Lynch did with Laura Palmer. Even Theresa’s murder feels like Twin Peaks. Clearly there are two ways to read the duality of these characters. I tend to think it challenges us to reject the Madonna-Whore dichotomy.

I upped my rating to 4.5 stars. I think it reaches that place where even its flaws work for it.

I think the fact that Atherton’s Nice Irish Boy is presented so unsympathetically is the tell. I think the POV is this is a tragedy in which the libertinism of the times also unleashed a lot of misogynist horror. I didn’t feel the film judged Theresa, even as she makes some questionable choices.
geniusbastard.bsky.social
No I just kind of assumed she had. But it seems fitting that she didn’t.

It’s hard to tell the difference at times. We do not like movies like this, as a rule. And yet, the film has a truth to it, ugly though it is.

I was thinking SNL would do a tribute card to Diane Keaton and then I learned she never hosted or appeared on the show. 👑

Keaton, who died at 79, is often remembered for her comedic performance in Annie Hall, but she did so much more throughout her career.
