Since this guy came on board, Louisiana has had a record pertussis year, with 2 infant deaths in the state. Now RFK Jr gave him a promotion up to the CDC.

My phone does the same things from 2015 except now they're harder to do and I hate it.

I have to download a different app to listen to music, because Google doesn't want me to listen to the music I own, they want me to subscribe.

My eBook app loads the goddamn store instead of my library.
My phone is doing all the same things from 2015 with only minimal benefits. The only reason we have to upgrade is increased software bloat.

We should actually just have phones that last 15 years now.

Traditions are often about joining ourselves to our communities and our present to our past. The present is an important part of that, and if the present has changed so that the old ritual no longer has the same effect, it's okay to change it and make some new traditions.

Pssst. Do you have a family tradition that NOBODY likes anymore? One of those ones that you kept up for years because it made your grandmother smile or tiptoed around some bugbear of an uncle you don't invite anymore?

If the practice no longer has a champion, you can just let it go if you want.

The United States government has ordered its employees not to speak at any events for World AIDS Day or promote them on social media.

I guess they think that if we ignore HIV/AIDS it will just go away.

It didn’t work for Reagan and it’s not going to work now.
1/ ⚠️ Breaking: At CDC, we've been told the US Government will not officially commemorate World AIDS Day this year. No explanation given.

(B) normalize asking questions, because that is normalizing learning;
(C) do not ask AI if your turkey is done; ask a meat thermometer

Also, I was not aware that a poem before dessert was even a thing. Is it a thing?

In any case, if someone delayed dessert so that they could read off some AI-written dreck, I would throw a roll at them.
Are people actually using AI for recipes? Because if they try to on Thanksgiving, it might be the single greatest reckoning AI has ever had.

It's so much harder to see a recipe error when you don't prepare the food often, and kitchen disasters are far worse when you have guests to observe them!

Stripping Voter Rights: SB 293 was passed by the legislature on November 19 and sent to the Governor's desk for signature.
What it does:

Require extra proof of U.S. citizenship or verification before someone could be treated as a registered elector, tightening eligibility rules for voting.

They tore down an old supermarket a couple blocks away, and a developer bought it to build apartment buildings, but they need it rezoned, and some of my neighbors are gearing up to protest and I'm just so, so angry.

I feel like so much of politics has turned into “well, if you give a mouse a cookie…” politics, without interrogating the fact that we actually deserve food and a warm, comfortable place to sleep and free hours in the day.

Somehow there's a connection between this and the death of Google Reader. The danger in letting people find and access other people's creations was that there was money being made there but it wasn't being made by Google. They're sure taken care of that.
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

How do we get him to enter a hibernation period?

Do we need to expose him to cold air? Take away his water? Please, my people are dying.
Elon Musk Facts:

Elon Musk is all over the map when it comes to sleep; he may nap for several hours, then stay awake for sessions of 30 hours or more. On the flip side, he can snooze for periods of up to three years, a survival instinct for when he feels the need to self-preserve.

Devastating.
Where I work, grad student enrollment in Engineering and Business is down 70% and 40%, respectively.

Now, to cover the loss in revenue from these Departments, the rest of the colleges have to take MASSIVE hits. History Dept alone has cut/closed 6 TT lines. Forget about raises or salary equity. 🫠
Enrollment by international students from China dropped by 3 percent, from India by 4 percent, and enrollment from students from Mexico has flatlined. Here are the likely consequences for Texas' education and economy:

I have no qualms about it at this moment because I need it.. but if I tripled this for YEARS I am still asking for less than “breaking” people make in ONE

They make more for twenty four hours than I even ASK for in twenty four years

And I’m NOT alone

So maybe when that stops we win
Welp it’s gotten real real if you can please help. If you can’t it’s really hard out here so share

Not exactly related, but this is how I feel about abortion access. I was born the same year as the Roe v. Wade decision. I had, for almost my entire life, a constitutional access to abortion care. It's wild to see it crumbling within a generation.
It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

Maybe get a paperback from the library or borrow one from a friend? Just to switch things up?

this reminds me that I love telling the story of the first time I went to Confession as a kid and very gravely told Father Harrington that I had picked the whole crust off the pie my mom had baked for guests that night and ate it because I was mad at her, which made him laugh so hard he cried
When I was a kid Ma was known for her desserts. Her Thanksgiving job was several pies, fruit and meat, all with homemade crust. One year her crusts were ruined in a baking accident and she had to use frozen store bought. Did 10-year-old me announce that fact to the whole family? I sure did.
