Environmental storytelling
The saddest thing:

I saw a like-new book at Goodwill by an author I collect. It was inscribed with something like, "Emily, I love you to the end of the world. You are my sun and moon. I can't imagine living a single day without you. This book is me. - Connor."

It was dated six weeks earlier.

"Did you see what Mark Cuban posted? Oh did you see the clapb—"

You shake yourself awake in the cold North Atlantic water. You are not online. It is July of 1858. You are a baleen whale, and you have changed your mind. The future most not come to pass. The telegraph cable must break.

Essentially, I think that LLM-generated dialogue only makes sense if you believe that the product of writing is words.

But the product of writing isn't words, any more than the product of justice is prisoners, or the product of love is weddings. The product of writing is meaning.

I’ve been in game dev for 26 years and I can’t remember any other time where a specific tech was being insistently and persistently pushed on devs as a group in the public sphere.

Why would it? Cui bono? Why would any given dev have an interest in other devs using tech they don’t have a stake in?
My conspiracy theory about genAI in games blowing up more and more by big companies is that they’ve all got a ton of investors insisting they use genAI tools otherwise they(investors) won’t be able to bankroll em anymore

another example of AI as tracer dye, exposing an already existing problem (and, of course, significantly worsening it)
I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite
Do not cite an academic paper unless you’ve read it

The issue about using a/i in games is simple:

Corporations of all sizes lie. They lie implicitly. If you've ever been employed by one you have been party to at least one corporate lie by volume. If a company is caught using a/i in one instance, the likelihood they've used it elsewhere skyrockets.

This is why I get so mad when the game forces me into the modern world. don't care nothing about that, I'm here to roam in historical landmarks until I get bored.
As a history nerd, I've bought Assassin's Creed games just to walk around the cities because I know they've collaborated with actual historians to try and reconstruct the era and landmarks as accurately as possibly...I dont think I've ever finished one to be honest, I just liked walking xD
