the brass tacks of all of this is that AI is a project of mass deskilling and the brick wall that sora is hitting is that you can’t deskill the arts the way tech assumes it can and scientific american are clowns for not calling that out given who they’re supposed to be.

like the very real reason that monsters like jean jacket are developed in concert with scientists or mocap work is still huge in film is that we do actually have a high threshold for what we’ll perceive as credible enough to be immersive

saying stuff like this relies on bone deep stupidity and an unwillingness to consult expertise. speculating on a future that requires completely frictionless improvement through iteration is nonsense. you can’t force something into reality by saying it could be something some day.

if you have any visual education whatsoever, then you can immediately see that sora can’t do lighting, texture, basic sight lines or credible camera positions etc etc on its own and if it could start to close those gaps the necessary compute power would be astronomical.

i guess the core issue from which everything else flows is that generative ai has no capacity to navigate out of the uncanny valley and it won’t. doing animation of any kind requires a whole host of technical aspects that can’t just be iterated into existence without human intervention.

the way you know this is bullshit is that it got laundered through a STEM publication. i was just at a talk with major vfx supervisors knocking down generative ai in film and tv for a whole host of technical and artistic issues it can’t resolve.
