I, too, am impressed at how much Mark Twain's father learned in 7 years.

It be hard out out here for the alt text scolds. Especially without Link now. But I see you out there getting attacked for suggesting users post accessibly. I hear your pain. I am one of you.

The age of majority ("being 18") has nothing to do with protecting children because we don't protect children.

Under capitalism, the age of majority simply specifies the term of the indentured service labor your parents are granted by the state in exchange for producing another consumer-labor unit.

Does anybody know an English slang term for "to swindle" or "to be swindled" that isn't racist?

"con" isn't quite right since it implies that the swindle involved outright deception, versus just exploitation of superior knowledge or whatever.

Chilling piece on employment effects of AI on early careers. Includes this line, which will probably become the norm for many firms: "Managers at Shopify must now justify hiring a human by first explaining why AI can’t do the job."

This is the beauty of gloryholes. You can have your little fantasy, I can have my little fantasy, and neither of us has to acknowledge the other as anything but an object.

Again, I would love to have conversations about art and how important it is for the human soul, but not with people who demand cheap-to-free labor from working class artists while having a ton of expensive corporate nerd shit in the background

I feel that over the last two years I have personally experienced the way social pressures to make conditions better for minorities in STEM have evaporated and while it’s understandable that people are distracted, it’s not acceptable that people are using that as an excuse

Mine are:

Remember the recent middle-of-the-night apartment building raid where children were dragged outside naked & zip-tied in the street while black & Latino residents were _sorted by race_ and piled into separate vans while their apartments were ransacked & robbed? That raid? So it resulted in 0 arrests.

One of the creepiest things about how propaganda works is that it doesn't have to be even a little bit true or convincing.

If something is repeated enough a lot of people just start to believe it unconsciously.

They just have to lie more often than you tell the truth and more people believe it

Child marriage is heinous, but one thing I never see brought up in those discussions is that if you are under 18, you cannot file for divorce. If you are under 18 and married to an adult, they are your legal guardian and make decisions for you. That is not a partnership.
Most Minors Who Are Married Can't File for Divorce — Even if They Want To
The final installment of Wedlocked, our series about child marriage in the U.S., explores divorce.

I don’t know how to tell people this but more women/BIPOC/LGBTQ artists winning things and gaining popularity was not supposed to be a cute trend and then a return to normality. It was supposed to be progress that we continued making.

I think a lot about my writing being way too queer for straights to read without remark, and yet not really "about" a common experience of queerness that would appeal to queer readers looking for reflection of that community.

But that's just me... I don't know how to fix it.

I love the whole "I don't have kids in school anymore, I shouldn't have to pay taxes that go to the public school" argument from people.

It's the classic "I got mine, fuck you."

I have no kids.

I never want kids.

Take more of my tax money and put it towards schools and not cops.

Thank you.

One of the most alienating parts of my autism and OCD is when my brain is torturing me and I need comfort, but then I go ask for comfort and they just freak out on me for having those thoughts. I have to be careful even with a shrink, since they're obligatory cops. Been this way since I was a baby.

I don't expect the bluesky mods to enforce their TOS against government accounts.

But they are the ones who decided to make the social media site where all the autistic people hang out.

"Say what the rules actually are, then apply them like you said you would" is a bare minimum for this crowd.
