The trolling happening on the social media posts of any member of Congress about the shooting at Brown or on the pages of Gifford's and March for our Lives is astonishing. Kids have been killed on their campus yet again, and people are there with their whole names and faces, not bots, mocking them.

When this guidance is published (given legal standing), as it almost certainly will be, as a trans man I will not be allowed to use non-unisex public toilets. Which is almost every public toilet.

Just want that to sink in, there.

my too hot for tv take on section 230 is that it sucks and is bad, but it is unfortunately interpreted in a way that lets the internet work the way it does, and to be clear, the way it works is both stupid and dumb, but the way the fascists want it to work is so much worse.

The LAPD also consistently hurts Angelenos and those who serve them (journalists!) without regard for human dignity + the massive legal costs it creates.
Inside LAPD's nearly $400M settlement crisis that's bankrupting LA
Taxpayers are covering civil rights violations and officer misconduct while basic city services face cuts—and a new audit could reveal whether LAPD is doing anything to stop the pattern.

The LAPD is the only city department that never gets told to find money elsewhere. It has entire, expensive programs that are destroying our environment, our quality of life, without any demonstrable impact on the safety of Angelenos.

Example: The ~$50 mill it burns on helicopters every year.
Why the Noise of L.A. Helicopters Never Stops
The L.A.P.D. says it has the largest local airborne law-enforcement unit in the world. A recent audit found little evidence that its choppers deter crime.

The mayor's letter asks the City Council to spend money it doesn't have on police recruits that don't exist to solve a problem that is fake.

There is no magic ratio of police officers to residents that will make LA more safe. The unsupported obsession with 10,000 officers is bankrupting us.
Yesterday, Mayor Karen Bass sent a letter to city council urging them to allocate $4.4 million to hire 410 LAPD officers. I wrote earlier about LAPD going over budget on hiring, w/o permission or identifying $ to cover the overages. Budget/finance committee was not happy.

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed
When I’ve written about Elsa chatbots and Marvel actress deepfakes, people always eagerly respond that Disney will surely sue the AI companies. Didn’t happen. Instead, they joined forces with them. You can’t trust corporate America to do what’s right, not even for them, once they smell money

To give you a sense of how big a departure this year, the government doesn't do this for wanted criminals.
SCOOP: The Trump administration is providing the names of all travelers passing through U.S. airports to immigration officials in search of people with deportation orders, a substantial expansion of government efforts to draw on data to hunt down immigrants.

The Daily Mail article last month where I learned about Bovino’s father killing a 26-year-old woman while driving drunk said he was sentenced to just a year.

This new Chicago Sun-Times article notes he only served four months of that.

The part where they wanted to take his picture to see if he was a citizen is them trying to establish an excuse to deport him. They're using AI to check people's photos to match against some database then claiming the AI is always right and docs saying otherwise are forgeries.

This is, of course, the correct response. He would only be required to carry documents under the INA if he wasn’t a citizen. You know this of course, but others may not.

It's an unpopular opinion but I don't think it's good to live in a society where men can grab you off the street and there's literally nothing you can do about it

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed
Bovino, the man overseeing mass deportations, publicly declared that we must all have our papers on us, at all times, or we could be stopped, harassed, kidnapped, and detained, as they did with the man in this case, who is a US citizen.

They are trying to repeal what allows social media to exist and to retain some semblance of free speech on the internet.

230 allows websites and apps to not be considered publishers for what users post on their platforms, i.e. to not be legally liable for what is said.
Sen. WHITEHOUSE: We finally are moving to file a bipartisan Section 230 repeal bill. Waiting any longer serves no useful purpose.
