Been sprucing up the back of our downstairs toilet door. It’s not perfect, but I’m quite pleased with it nonetheless.

My favourite cinema moment will always and forever be when we took my late Granny to see “The World is Not Enough” (I think in the Pearl and Dean cinema in Ashton Lane in Glasgow). The last film she’d seen at the cinema was The Graduate.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

You don’t need to be a Democrat to know this is wrong — you just need a conscience. If you can hear what these people survived in ICE custody and feel no outrage, then we are not standing on the same side of right and wrong.

Has anyone got any suggestions for recent Scottish fiction that might be suitable to use an excerpt from for my GCSE resit students? I’m planning the Burns Night week lessons for spring but they’re not studying poetry. (Might still sneak some in the shorter of the two lessons though!)

Like free books? Like writing about SFF and its visions? Then get involved. ARB does excellent coverage and thoughtful reviews/discussions of so much.
ARB puts up a call for reviews every month, but: at the end of each year, we find ourselves looking at a *long* list of speculative fiction & related non-fiction that we'd love to cover! Do your part to fight recency bias, and claim one of these!
2025 Reviews: Last Call
The Ancillary Review of Books does focus on newly-released works as they are published. However, we very much want to fight recency bias in book coverage, and the idea that books just vanish if the…

Decided to spend the last 9 months of my PhD dressing like Galinda in beautiful dresses. Oh, those dresses.

CHECK IT OUUUUUUUUUT!

I am *so* delighted with this cover, it's amazing! June 2026 still feels like a long way off, but I'm really looking forward to everyone meeting Kitt Carver, Two-Tongue Derna, Sulian the Swallowmage, and the rest of the cast.

And, of course, the slydewasps.
We are thrilled to reveal the cover for THIS IS WHERE THE FUTURE BLEEDS by @mikebrooks668.bsky.social! 🐝

A smart-talking bunch of rogues and dropouts are thrust into an epic quest to save the future and meddle with the destinies of empires.

Coming June 2026!

I love these, because they illustrate the (now) somewhat alien Victorian codes of sentiment and emotional expression (let's foster tenderhearted feelings by looking at something cute but sad), but you just know there were a few outliers who received these and interpreted them as a threat.

Your annual reminder that the most revealing difference between Irish and Scottish Gaelic is definitely in the words for December: Mí na Nollag (Month of Christmas) in Ireland, and An Dubhlachd (the Blackness) in Scotland. So once again may I wish you all a lovely Blackness.
