It's like this was a deliberate strategy...(as Talia mentions earlier in the thread).
They saw people were tolerant of trans adults, so they went after the kids, or specifically, the idea *their* kids could be influenced.
People are a lot more reactionary when it comes to kids.

I do have to point out that even with a more-accepting society, there is a gulf between "I am okay with queers" and "I am okay with my kid being a queer". People can support LGBT rights in the abstract and then get spooked when their own precious cinnamon roll makes them a "non-traditional family".

Since a lot of folks have suggested ableist alternative words let’s chat about this:
Intelligence is not something that can be measured without employing bigotry and it’s not something that determines a moral compass or good vs bad
So any word at all that uses intelligence as an insult is ableist

I’m seeing increased use of this word and I just want to gently suggest that if there’s one word you can manage to remove from your vocabulary it should be this one.
It was coined by a eugenicist who used it as a diagnosis to forcibly institutionalize and sterilize mentally disabled people.

Never forget that after quarantine ended we still managed to kill off a strain of the flu with like half of the country being non-compliant about masking.
