Most of the internet used to be like this. This is actually the default, it took companies enclosing the internet and adding weird, soul-killing incentives to make people behave the way they do now. In a way, there is truly nothing special about Wikipedia except that it survived longer.
“Wikipedia is this economic anomaly. In many ways, it’s sort of magical that people will just volunteer without explicit economic incentives to create artifacts that are meant to share knowledge with everyone in the world”

Every. Single. Story. about women not using AI as much as men portray it as bad for their future career prospects (without a shred of evidence) and a result of women being fearful little ladies rather than looking at AI's output and saying "this sucks, it's not going to help me."
For women, the increase of AI use in the workplace may affect their careers: Harvard study
Women are using AI significantly less then men and it’s going to have a major impact on their careers, according to extensive research on the topic.

In a few years (max) when people start asking why we thought AI was a good idea I am creating a record that we did NOT think it was a good idea and the main reason people were ever convinced was billions of dollars of propaganda

If be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous about the storms we were supposed to get this PM. But now that it looks like the Metro is threading the needle and avoiding all the serious weather threats, I have to admit I'm a little disappointed.

Social media can be fun, just for "the discourse" and the memes, but the massive platforms don't feel "social" enough for me to really put my heart into them. I prefer more direct personal connections. So nice that things seem to be trending that way again!

Welcome to the Great Internet Splintering
I don't know where to post; there are too many social media platforms, and the old giants are dying. But a fragmented internet could be better.

So a lot of people who are in unstable, abusive, and/or periodically violent living situations keep cell phones hidden for emergencies.

If you know anyone in such a situation, make sure they know about FEMA's testing of its Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system next Wednesday.

Musk ruined a network of social contacts I had built over the course of more than a decade and I haven’t had the strength to rebuild it somewhere else yet. I just find people again randomly like we’re all on life rafts adrift in the ocean after the Titanic sank.

Brody was born in the shelter, mother was a stray. I adopted him when he was 9.5 weeks old, and he's been my faithful shadow for over 11 years.

He's been with me through so much, but now he has a fast-growing cancer and isn't long for this world. He's a sweet boy and I'm going to miss him so much💔

1/ Drives me nuts when the school sends home stuff at the beginning of the school year that says stuff like, "We will have a designated snack time each day. Please send a healthy/protein rich snack like fruit, vegetables, raisins, or crackers".

Apparently I've been making coffee too weak all my life - like 1/3rd the strength that's typically recommended??? I've been happy enough.

But this morning I made French press with a 1:15 ratio, closer to recommended strength.

This isn't even in the same UNIVERSE as what I usually make at home damn

The entire United States healthcare system. A taxpayer-funded system would be cheaper and more efficient, but hospital owners want profits and insurance companies want profit and congress wants "campaign donations" so people die and leave their families in bankruptcy.

ok, I joined yesterday and I have a few thoughts:

1) it is SO easy to set your own domain as your handle on here! such a great verification method. A little different than how Mastodon handles it, but I like both (especially compared to the birdsite)
