Good morning, new followers from the polling and data starter pack!

I don’t work in the industry anymore but spent 10 years as a pollster/campaign consultant for Democratic candidates and causes. These days I’m in law school, hoping to practice labor law, but still post about polling regularly-ish.

This really needs to be stressed, as it seems obvious Trump is going to let them vote to release it and then pretend his hands are tied.

He’s had the power to release them all along, and still does. It’s just his excuses that are changing.
The second paragraph of every article about Trump freeing House Republicans to vote to release the Epstein files should make it clear that he could order them released himself and chooses not to.

I’m going to gently suggest to our media betters that maybe, just maybe, this isn’t such brilliant prose that we need to overlook its author sleeping with a source and let her continue failing upwards unimpeded.

Jamie Raskin endorsed Mamdani while others in Democratic leadership did not, and also its incredibly obvious from the context he's telling a joke. People need to fucking look things up
I've seen multiple people QT this with "The party that couldn't endorse Zohran is endorsing MTG" and you guys gotta pay attention to what the party is actually doing before you get mad. Most Democrats have been enthusiastic about Zohran.
Raskin: We are a big tent. We must be a huge, vast tent. I say this is a party that’s got room for Marjorie Taylor Greene if she wants to come over.

Trying to figure out how it is that the first item of clothing I really need to replace since starting Zepbound is the black sweatpants I like to sleep in.

It makes some sense, I guess? The waistband elastic is all stretched out and, unlike with outside pants, I can’t wear a belt with these.

I think this is really true

Like fuck her, it’s not sincere, even if it is I have no grace for her, but moving back toward a world where it’s seen as a political liability to gleefully be an atrocious person would be Good Actually
Literally stunned that someone like MTG is forcing herself to apologize, of all things. Indicative of a political wind blowing away from performative cruelty in politics because she is a weather-vane politician if ever there was one.

guys I hate to burst the blowjob bubble but the "blowing Bubba" thing in the Epstein e-mails is very likely to be them making prison rape jokes. Trump is going to prison, therefore Trump is going to have to blow Bubba - the mythical rapey fellow inmate of gross prison jokes by U.S. men.

Personally, I think the idea that all women should be measured by the failures of Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris is actually a sort of sexist doomerism.

If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

Yeah, I think this is an important point to keep in mind with the right wingers who are all in on Epstein - they’re in because they think it’s proof that Jewish pedophiles run the world, and you absolutely do not gotta hand it to them for that
There are 2 things happening with MTG:

1) She's an HR nightmare. Her schoolyard bullying antics mean no one, regardless of politics, wants her in their workplace.

2) She's a full believer in antisemitic conspiracy theories, and from that point of view Trump looks like part of the conspiracy.

I’d say that the imposition of this administrative burden is a solution in search of a problem (fraud and abuse, not a systemic issue), but it’s really a solution to a different problem: Poor people being able to exist with basic dignity.
After using hungry Americans as pawns, this will only make it more difficult for families in need to put food on the table.

There’s an old joke that the most dangerous place in New York is between Chuck Schumer and a TV camera. If you can’t get him on your show, that’s a skill issue.

To be begrudgingly fair, his brain is mush and I think you could get him to say he hasn’t ruled out, like, sending a cheetah to the moon. Doesn’t mean it’ll happen.

But holy shit, if he actually does this… “Siri, what is the exact opposite of damage control?”
Trump just told reporters on Air Force One that he hasn’t ruled out a pardon for Ghislane Maxwell

My sister’s baby is due shortly after Christmas, so I’m making her a gift basket of all the things she likes and can’t eat/drink during pregnancy. One of her favorite cocktails is an espresso martini. I’ve never made one and Internet sources differ on the ideal ingredients. What should I get?

I would very conspicuously leave out one of my larger, denser history book to bolster my intellectual credentials - perhaps Battle Cry of Freedom or a Doris Kearns Goodwin - and then Getting to Maybe to be extra nice to one of the co-authors, who is a professor and mentor of mine.
alright let’s get something more pleasant going. what two books would you leave out on your coffee table so a reporter can mention you have them. doesn’t matter if you’ve read them. for me it’s Pale Fire (which I did read) and Ulysses (got like 15% of the way in)

21 weeks on Zepbound! Holding steady at last week’s weight, but my energy levels are noticeably improving, which I think is a sign of adjusting to the new dose. Still very few other side effects to speak of. I am wondering, though, if I’m more sensitive to cold or if CT is just getting colder. 😂
I forgot to post last week, so today is 20 weeks on Zepbound! I’ve lost another 2 pounds and I’m feeling good. A little part of me wants to be under 300 pounds by the New Year and that seems unlikely (but not impossible, I’m at 310 now), but I’m making good progress and I’m content with that.
Week 18, and it's a "scale go fwoosh" week. I've lost 3 pounds this week, 36 total. (This is okay for me since I'm just over 300 pounds - it would be too fast for someone at a lower starting weight.) The 5 mg dose is working as intended, though I'm still fighting fatigue and mental struggles.

'Matt Gaetz Raped A Homeless Teenager' is what you mean.

A teenager with a homeless parent? What? The fuck? Did she have a home and not allow her parent to live in it? Ended up having sex with? What? Yeah clearly you guys been caping for pedos long enough and you understand the assignment here
A teenager in Florida with a homeless parent wanted money for braces and ended up having sex for money with powerful men, setting off a chain of events that would have a dramatic impact on her life and help upend the political career of Representative Matt Gaetz. nyti.ms/49PSkL9

We always look back at how overboard the NYT went on Hillary's emails, but I think it's also informative how underboard they went on Access Hollywood tape. The very first story led with his apology, as if that was more important than the existence of the tape itself.

I'll be even more blunt: your morally and aesthetically pure message actually communicates "Starbucks will not lose any money due to this strike because of me." That is the opposite of helpful.

I drink Starbucks sometimes. I will not today. I hope enough others join me that they notice.
RE starbucks picket line--the relevant detail is "picket line, do not cross." Pass that along. Proclaiming that you are in no danger of doing so because you are too aesthetically pure to let Starbucks coffee pass your lips is...unhelpful and does not give the impression you perhaps imagine it does.
