My cherished personal gaming feat: GBA Astro Boy: Tetsuwan Atom Omega Factor Hard Mode CLEAR! It was worth facing so many deaths in achieving that feat especially. It remains a personal GBA favorite and one of my favorite Treasure games. A neat gateway into checking out Tezuka Osamu’s other works!
The final revision of Virtua Striker 2 (1997-1999) made the jump from Sega Model 3 to NAOMI, DC Ver. 2000.1 is the only home port. The NAOMI/DC versions were co-developed by Sega Software R&D4 (=>Amusement Vision) and Genki. Bean the Dynamite plays for FC Sega because Satoshi Mifune!
Virtua Striker 2 Ver. 2000.1 released 26 years ago! (12/2/99)

An update to Virtua Striker 2, bringing it's rosters up to date, this is a pretty standard Football Game but as a First-Party Sega title, it goes without saying, that it's top-notch in every way, and very deserving of the Virtua moniker!

I think the situation with defense in particular is one to look at, because blocking for a long time without a clear chance to turn the situation around is something that feels bad until you're kinda deep into these games

and it makes me think that maybe fighter designers thought so much about what new players don't want in a fighter's design that they didn't quite look at it from a perspective of what they *do* want, which is to do things that feel cool and fun with characters they like

was thinking about this on the stream I was on earlier tonight because we were playing Touhou Hisoutensoku, a game that I know attracts non-FG players thanks to being Touhou
that game has a bajillion mechanics but also you can fly all over the place and shoot big blasts with single button presses

and of course not every fighter needs this, and there's only so much you can do to make an inherently complex type of game to interact with beginner-friendly. but there are ways to make these games more fun to start playing that are baked into the design, IMO.

I think a fighting game that gets beginners playing and having fun, as much as it possibly could, tends to have a number of strong and flexible things available to the player without needing a ton of effort first
stuff like flexible movement with straightforward inputs, a clear Defensive Thing, etc.

I think this might've made for some very frustrating fighting games, because if hurdle 1 for beginners is "how do I do [x]", then hurdle 2 or 3 is "what do I do about [y]"

and if the answer is "you literally just have to guess on something and if you're wrong you explode", things get rough

I feel like Street Fighter 5 and games in its wake were made with this idea that "fighting games are hard for beginners because there are too many things players can do, so if we let the player do less it'll be easier"

which is a pretty reasonable assumption. but I think it might be wrong as fuck?

Here's an entire Konami game that never made it out despite being extremely far into production. TwinBee Miracle for PS1 in 1995, due for release in 1996

Much more interesting looking than the 3D TwinBee RPG that came out in 1998

Speaking of art, here's ultra rare Capcom concept artwork for when Strider Hiryu was going to be a Sea Otter🤯

100% true & definitely not 1990 fan art mixing Strider Hiryu with manga character Bonobono😉

Anything designed & made by a human is art in some way. Games are good as art as they combine sights, sounds & require your direct interaction to experience them. Often, the better you are, the more you can experience

Other artistic media remain the same each time they're experienced, unlike games
I see many folks online obsessed with games being taken Very Seriously As An Artistic Medium, but only hype certain games easy digestible as Art. Other media (e.g. books, film) are full of messy, lowbrow, utterly bizarre things made for different niches that nonetheless find appreciators
was discussing this stuff with someone recently and i said that the 'games are art' conversations frustrate me cuz they're often about perceiving games as products worthy of accolades and praise, not seeing them as Art - the raw, messy, fallible end-result of human creativity.

and welp!

i think even something as simple as designing a one-page dice-rolling game would reveal to these people that game design is itself an artform through which ideas and emotions can be expressed.

this knowledge would hopefully fix the most annoying parts of both pro- and anti- "games are art" people.

There's also a frustrating number of "games as art!!" people who won't look beyond narrative-based stuff. Like, Lumines Arise is legit interactive art, but try telling that to someone who thinks it's nothing but a score-chaser. And this isn't even getting into "mechanics and game design as art".
