Not disagreeing that turning to the camera and stating the themes sucks (even if something wants to be not subtle and that can work going so far as to literally say it sucks) does that make it didactic? I thought something being didactic was when the theme was just "don't do/be like x that's bad"
I think the worst possible thing Water Tastes Like Wine did was the boss fights and when it turned to the camera and outright stated what it meant. 80 Days handled the "art is political but art is not didactic" line a lot better in that it allowed you to process the situations it presented.

Yeah lmao like a story having a large history and world outside the immediate plot can be really cool and often reinforces the themes of a story. But so many people act like the role of the story is *just* to show them that extended world and completely ignore how the purpose of a story is still
Fandom these days seems to perceive fiction as a sort of psychic accounting of some perspective on a theoretical world that exists, intrinsically complete, coherent, and causal, as opposed to art made by humans with conscious intent to express ideas and emotions and theme.
