whats missing from all the coverage is that the president is using the military to harass, brutalize and punish areas of the country that didnt vote for him

I know votes on legislative packages often involve cross-cutting considerations, and members of Congress will have to weigh those. But if I were a member of Congress, I don’t believe I could vote for any appropriation bill that funded DHS without requiring changes in ICE and CBP practices.

I actually would disagree with this take - though he might not have known it, Hitler has essentially set the conditions to make eventual defeat and regime extinction very likely (and so his great power position very poor) by November 1940 at the latest, even with the success of Fall Gelb/Rot.
From a great power diplomacy perspective, Hitler had a good run until the twin idiocies of invading the Soviet Union and declaring on the US.

His luck might have run out with the invasion of Poland if the invasion of France hadn’t worked. However, he did have a de facto alliance with the Reds.
In defense of my discipline, we do not, in fact, all agree to that.

Indeed, the general view from a military perspective is that the Wehrmacht succeeded (to the degree it did) substantially despite Hitler. I'm not sure many serious historians of any field would label him a 'genius.'

We tend to lose sight of how many war crimes Germany committed in WWI because the Germans were so much worse in WWII; but ofc, you can be much, much better than the Nazis but still be absolutely atrocious
Oh. The First World War was broadly speaking a battle that had a clear good and bad side, Britain declaring war wasn’t an imperialist excuse but motivated by a genuine public and moral need to defend Belgium.
Here’s a fun top five: things that are consensus among historians but are essentially unknown by the public. Richard I, a bad king of England. Roman Empire, fell in 1453. Paul, more important than Jesus. Witch burning, a modern phenomenon not a medieval one. Britain last invaded in 1688. Yours?

It's good—very good, and very important—that district courts keep issuing these 100-page rulings upholding the law. It must be incredibly dispiriting to see them overturned in a two-page, lawless, unsigned order, but please, keep them coming. They expose SCOTUS' corruption like nothing else.

Almost certainly also true for Trump!
Sometimes I wonder if the real reason many European politicians fear a Russian defeat is that the Kremlin archives might become accessible then. That in turn could lead to the politicians being exposed as corrupt traitors.

This is one advantage of having the historical memory of authoritarianism, as I have from Brazil: you know that, when the regime is gone, the people who collaborated and acquiesced look terrible in retrospect. It may look reasonable and justifiable now, but believe me, it will age like milk.

They believe that Trump will use the formal powers of the government and whatever informal powers he may have to extract costs from them if they do not play ball and they equally believe that the anti-Trump coalition will not extract these costs.

So we need to extract those costs.
given how unpopular Trump is, it’s insane that civil society/universities/law firms are still asking themselves “how do I stay on Trump’s good side” rather than “how do I avoid facing consequences for complying with Trump’s illegal demands”
New Gallup poll shows Trump's approval hit a new low for his second term:
-36% approve
-60% disapprove

His approval among Republicans went from 91% in January to 84% in November

Trump also responded to the video by threatening to kill the members of Congress who made it, which rather confirms everything they are saying…
Oddly enough, in media coverage of Dems' video warning against carrying out illegal orders, there's very little discussion of *whether it's actually reasonable to fear Trump is giving illegal commands or not.*

The evidence is strong that he is. Media should say so:

Who is negotiating for the USA that they think that these proposals are anything but non-starters?

Noteworthy that the gap between the popular vote & parliamentary results in British elections is regularly orders of magnitude larger than the popular vote-electoral college gap in the US
Another factor is people believe the British parliamentary system is better then what the US has and well I don't know. That system recently proposed stealing jewelery from immigrants so...🤷‍♂️

A guy asking Epstein for advice on how to sexually harass a junior colleague knows exactly what Epstein was and was clearly OK with it. I am frankly OK with someone ruining his life.

Evidently it ought to have happened decades ago.
