The incident was long seen as an embarrassing incident for the Soviet and global communist leadership and was even cited as one of the reasons for his removal from power in 1964.

there is no photographic or video evidence oh his actually banging the shoe on the desk, nor do newspaper reports from the day indicate banging. While he did wave the shoe around, widely accepted and supported by a variety of testimony, he may not have hit the desk with the shoe.

Although Khrushchev recounts the shoe-incident in his memoirs, quite fondly it should be noted,

demanded to respond as a Point of Order in which he berated Sumulong as a "a jerk, a stooge, and a lackey", and a "toady of American imperialism".

Once Khrushchev had returned to his desk and Sumulong continued to speak, Khrushchev continued to object by banging his fist on the desk, and

Sumulong was giving a speech in which he said that "the peoples of Eastern Europe and elsewhere which have been deprived of the free exercise of their civil and political rights and which have been swallowed up, so to speak, by the Soviet Union" to which Khrushchev immediately

OTD October 12 1960 - Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, while in attendance at the 902nd Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly protests a speech by Filipino delegate Lorenzo Sumulong by allegedly banging his shoe on his desk.
