The incident was long seen as an embarrassing incident for the Soviet and global communist leadership and was even cited as one of the reasons for his removal from power in 1964.

there is no photographic or video evidence oh his actually banging the shoe on the desk, nor do newspaper reports from the day indicate banging. While he did wave the shoe around, widely accepted and supported by a variety of testimony, he may not have hit the desk with the shoe.
