In 2016, McBob’s hosted a Thanksgiving meal for about 40 Milwaukee-area veterans. Since then, the tradition has grown into something much larger and deeply meaningful.

my dissertation was about the history of Catholic converts in the US and every day something makes me remember how often I was told it was too niche
My dissertation turns 10 next month and I've been dipping in to see if there's anything in there worth pulling out and working with, and each chapter is effectively about a different emotional struggle that would be familiar today.

Yeah! Congregating with strangers around sometimes-parochial interests or niche experiences is NOT what the internet is for! I agree!

This essay by @johannawinant.bsky.social is beautiful on what can happen in the classroom, and on the importance of *argument* to literary studies. I especially like how she writes about helping students to "believe in their own significance"

I reject the AI booster insistence that you must understand any and everything about the tech to make even the tiniest critique, if they can be vibe coders I can be a vibe hater

New Sven Beckert dropped, is what I hear in this!
Here is a review I wrote of Sven Beckert’s impressive new book, *Capitalism: A Global History*, for the New York Times.

The same people who have been having their heads cryogenically frozen at death in the hopes that we might someday have the tech to resurrect them when we don’t even have the tech now to properly keep their heads frozen
This is the same phenomenon
The desire to treat AI as having a soul is based on the same pathological terror at their own mortality that drives these same men to invest in life extension foundations.

If the AI has a soul, then consciousness is code and their own consciousness can be uploaded and thus they can live forever.

Another Madison landmark, Lombardino's Family Restaurant. Delicious food in an atmosphere frozen in amber in 1955. Interestingly, the family that owned and ran Lombardino's between ~1965-95 lived in our house!

Medical debt should not exist - and yet it’s one of the top reasons Americans file for bankruptcy.

Any healthcare plan that doesn’t start with the recognition that medical care is a basic human right grossly misses the mark.

This is what happens when you give Republicans three branches of government.
Quotes on the economy, last few days:

* WSJ: “Life felt more doable a year and a half ago.”

* CBS: “Paying for the house, the car — I just couldn’t do it anymore.”

* FT: “scraping for crumbs.”

Every single member of this administration is, deep down, Troy from the Goonies
When you draw a platoon leader like Hegseth, it’s your worst nightmare. You just ride it out until he’s gone and gets replaced by someone who isn’t a complete jackass. Only a fool like Trump would put one of them in charge of the entire defense department.

When the BSA is too woke, you’re in huge trouble. No Republican administration can afford to lose the Unit 41 vote.

Since I started grad school, I have indexed hundreds and hundreds of books. I love it, and I have learned so much.

Every time I write a book, though, I hire someone else to index it. Because indexing one’s own book is a madness-inducing nightmare.
I'd rather eat broken glass than index another book... It's well worth the thousand bucks or so. #academicchatter
