Mali has announced that US nationals visiting the West African country will be required to post a bond of up to $10,000 (£7,500) for business and tourist visas, in response to a similar requirement the Trump administration has imposed on its citizens.

This work is really important. I see the language in the 2nd ad all the time — “you’re not alone.”

But the subtext is: “You’re absolutely alone."

Whatever this “Crimson” organization is offering, it DEPENDS on you feeling alone.

That’s what makes it predatory.

Meanwhile, ed tech companies are salivating--eager to sell "solutions" to families whose schools will now struggle (even more than they already have) to meet their kids' learning needs.

(Here are a few of the ed tech ads I've been tracking over the past few months)

There’s a looseness to the Giants’ offense again, a confidence that’s been missing. Jaxson Dart’s not perfect, but you can see why the building believes in him.

For many of the tasks where they're being pushed, LLMs' effect on student learning and worker productivity is roughly the same as that of alcohol
maxkennerly.bsky.social
IMHO, LLMs will be an economic negative for years.

They'll do a worse job than humans,

but will still replace humans because they're cheaper for employers,

but really they're costlier, it's just that lots of costs get externalized to society by our horrible energy/tax policies.

Lose-lose-lose.

I’m sure you’ve got somebody for it if it needs it, but JUST IN CASE you don’t, I want to index this book. I promise to listen to Midnite Vultures on repeat while I do, just like I did that one whole week in the summer of 2000.

This wasn’t out yet when I was a day-to-day substitute teacher in the MPLS public schools, living hand to mouth in ungentrified lyn-lake, through the grayest, slushiest winter. But when it landed, I was like, someone is writing the truth. Wait for the bonus track.

The headline of the graphic makes it sound as though America is trying to attract new scientists, and whoopsie, we got some policy detail wrong.

A more accurate headline would read “Young scientists take note when the US govt says In this house we believe fuck science and fuck you."

The scene early in Forrest Gump where the mom goes to bed with the Principal to secure a free and appropriate public education for her child did not make any sense to me when I saw that movie as a kid, but it makes a lot of sense now as the GOP vision for future access to special education services
