B-36 in flight, with escort fighter. A wingtip modification is visible as part of Project FICON, which explored how to provide fighter escort for the bomber over long range. The concept was that escorts would connect in-flight to the bomber, disconnect when needed and reconnect

On September 1, 1952, 76 B-36 Peacemakers sustained damage as a tornado swept across Carswell AFB. Although all but one of the aircraft were repaired and returned to service, the event highlighted to SAC the severe damage then even the pressure wave of a nuclear bomb would have on the strike force
