I never did an intro post, but I guess Bluesky is becoming the most viable platform sooo I’m Adrian, I work in consumer product safety & mostly talk about that. Aspirationally I’ve got a sad gay book out on sub & hope to talk about that someday; in the meantime i’m writing another sad gay book lol
“How many children work at your factories” 🙃
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

Small bag company hired me into a job I was under qualified for, to do important production tasks no one else wanted to do, and abused me horribly. This is a microcosm for the manufacturing industry lol. Also there are some skills NO ONE wants to do so if you do them people are GRATEFUL to hire you
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

If you're interested in the debate about whether Zohran Mamdani should keep Jessica Tisch as police commissioner — and in the future of policing in New York City — this @attackerman.bsky.social piece is very much worth a read.

Mamdani's NYC Can't Afford NYPD Commissioner Tisch
With ICE on its way, how can we expect an ICE collaborator to protect New Yorkers? Here's a compromise: make Tisch sanitation commissioner again

How Brutalism Became Both a Utopian Dream and a Dystopian Meme
Brutalism, an architectural movement associated with state power and science fiction, is perpetually misunderstood – yet it has left an indelible imprint on popular culture.

The truly maddening thing is that, unlike when I was a young man in science and the materials and engineering just weren’t there yet, the future is *right there.* The problem is *solved*. What’s holding us back is not just greed, but this bizarre nostalgia, an obsession with petro- masculinity.
Australia has so much electricity from solar power that it is going to start offering free electricity to everyone for at least three hours during the day as the wholesale price of power goes negative

A few years ago we were gamely trying to distract my mom from a bad mood by pointing out the lovely scenery around us, only to have her angrily yell “Those flowers are SHIT.”

It’s our shorthand now for when you know you’re being a butthole but you’re determined to have the tantrum anyway
do you ever have things that someone has said to you that live forever in your head (non-serious edition)? some older boomer hippie guy said “hahmmus gives you fahts” to me 26 years ago at a free fridge and i think of it every fucking single time i buy hummus to this day.

Even if you don't have babies or children directly in your life, this stuff is good to know/spread around.

What the US gov is doing is across the board is evil, and eradicating the ability to get fact checked/study based reliable information about keeping infants and babies safe is extra vile.
This is an incredibly important article & anyone with babies in their lives should read it.

Not to derail, but I’m a subject matter expert on children’s products incl sleep products, and in the absence of official resources I would be VERY HAPPY to answer any questions on this or similar subjects
Who knew* I had 5k words in me about:
-The hallucinatory pain of new-parent sleep-deprivation
-Weirdo slop product listings
-Contradictory ChatGPT advice
-Fuzzy accountability in IG & TikTok shopping
-Funding cuts to public health

A rising trend in climate space has been to claim that vague "AI" technologies will result in massive, deep and permanent cuts to global emissions.

These analyses leave out the effect of big tech's software on helping fossil fuel companies. You can guess why.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.
