If your response to this is "why should we support coal workers," or "tell me who they voted for first," I would urge you to think about what differentiates you from the current regime that favors only the ones they deem worthy. Just transition for all is just transition for ALL.

New coal leases in the Powder River Basin have been paused after the first one had only a bid for 1/10th of a penny. They are trying to blame previous administrations, but the writing is on the wall. We should be supporting coal workers and communities not doing wtf this clown show is doing.
US postpones Wyoming coal lease sale after disappointing Montana auction
The Trump administration has postponed a scheduled sale of coal leases on federal lands in Wyoming two days after a disappointing auction in Montana, an Interior Department spokesperson said on Wednesday.

I don't hold out much hope for it but I wish with all my heart that Luisa and Teresa went home to Manaytique and lived out the rest of their days eating salted chestnuts with their old neighbors and their neighbors' children and grandchildren.

Here is a fairly drafty first draft!

I am so thrilled to tell the story of these two Appalachian Indigenous women from the 16th century, a story that is just barely tellable. Please let me know if you use it!

You know what *I* should do is respond to the comments on the climate & community resilience game I'm helping to design & start drawing the cards for it
kateschapira.bsky.social
That brings us to 2 Qs. *Does* the climate info mean what you thought? & if it does, what do you want to do--not "about it" necessarily, but *because you know it*? If you want to mourn, or act, how & w/whom? These deaths & proximities to death give us a gift of questions--let's not waste them. (5/5)
kateschapira.bsky.social
No answer is wrong! BUT there may be sthg useful in beholding the feeling, incl the impulse to share the info that provoked it. Often w/info like this, the feeling comes from what you think/know the info *means* or what the event is a *sign of*--what that's challenging or confirming for you (4/5)
kateschapira.bsky.social
It's a mistake, you probably know, to try to make fear, dismay, even despair "go away" or even redirect it w/o finding out what makes the thing grievous to the person speaking. So if *you* felt those ways, or other painful ways, upon seeing that headline: what makes reef death grievous to you? (3/5)
kateschapira.bsky.social
Marine biologists & science journalists were *already* writing about coral bleaching & reef death as inevitable in 2013. That inevitability is what freaked me out. Similarly, people often bring forth this "tipping point" or "point of no return" wording to the booth, w/fear, dismay & despair. (2/5)
kateschapira.bsky.social
I see people sharing this, maybe as an act of shared mourning, an attempt to stir action, or confirmation that the world sucks. The death of reef ecosystems pushed me into a panic about climate change in 2013 & led to me starting the Climate Anxiety Counseling booth in 2014. So, a few things (1/5)

… today, a group of 160 scientists from 23 countries is announcing that the planet has already reached its first major tipping point: the widespread death of warm-water coral reefs.
Corals are disappearing, pushing Earth to its first major ‘tipping point’
A new report says Earth has reached a dire milestone with the widespread death of warm-water coral reefs. It's not too late to save what remains.

Wrote about the temptation to put Gaza on the back burner now that the ceasefire is solidifying—and why we can't let that happen. Gaza still needs you, and me, and everyone to fight until real Palestinian liberation is won. www.discourseblog.com/p/gaza-still...

Got to hold and sing to a very little baby AND a medium-little baby last night. We sang "Roll the Old Chariot Along," "They All Asked for You," "Step by Step," & "Gentle Arms of Eden." I tried to also hold the medium-big baby but he was not having it

If you like, on this Don't Argue Inside Your Head With Other People Friday, you can also observe an internet holiday that my friend CJ invented, Don't Argue On The Internet Day--if there's a principled stand to take, take it, but "don't spelunk deep into the comments to argue with clowns."

It's Don't Argue Inside Your Head With Other People Friday. Today, if you like, you can practice moving your mind away gently from the arguments that start up inside your head w/people who aren't present, or whom it's not safe or not fair for you to argue with. Do this as many times as you need.
