No one who wants to be understood talks like that. Distasteful behavior

@definitelyvita.bsky.social was absolutely shook to find out that Santa Cruz does not capitalize on having been the setting for the vampire murder capital of the world, and on reflection they’re right, we really should. There should be vampire merch all over the Boardwalk

CA Prop 65 and other toxin laws are one of those. Anything having to do with Walmart is another. I was naturally interested in how product safety laws, worker protections/lack of, and environmental harm tie together, so sort of just started specializing

Yeah we started it and just got to the monster, and immediately I started yelling at the movie. Not sure I’ll be able to finish it 🫠 it hits different

The middle ground is the same advice given by the guy whose mentions we’re all blowing up 🥲 keep a list of brands that work for you, hunt for them second hand, or buy just 1-2 new pieces of clothes a year as your special treat, slowly replacing the lesser quality items as they burn out
November 20, 2025 at 4:04 AM
Fair enough! I’m not plus size so not as familiar with the brand differences, but I can dig it from the perspective of a short person trying to find pants that don’t drag on the ground lol

So you have to have more money and do business at a larger scale than a lot of start ups have. That said I fully agree, it’s not impossible. It’s cash left on the table for anyone that can scale to the demand
November 20, 2025 at 3:31 AM
My understanding is that since people gain weight in different ways you need more basic patterns to fit different shapes at the same “size,” which=larger product assortment, therefore larger inventory since you have to account for MOQ across all SKUs. Greater risk since that means high up front costs
November 20, 2025 at 3:29 AM
Consumers don’t know how much it costs to make anything. The downward price pressure is what drives the bad quality, not the reverse.
November 20, 2025 at 3:22 AM
I don’t mean quality so much as cost and frequency of “drops”. They lowered what was an already extremely unreasonable expectation of low prices, and then gamified it, with hundreds of new items loaded every day onto their site. They baked in the disposability in hauls and always needing newness

Sadly though I think Shein really has skewed customer behavior and expectations to an insane degree, so maybe it really isn’t a viable business anymore (especially with all the uncertainties manufacturing overseas these days).
November 20, 2025 at 3:10 AM
There are real logistical challenges to designing plus size clothes, which is always the excuse, but tbh as a professional I think it’s dumb as hell not to go for it, like the complexity has to be outweighed just by the sheer number of potential customers absolutely starving to be sold to

They do earn overtime! And even very good factories will get dinged for “excessive overtime” when audited. It’s not forced labor, more the nature of a migrant labor force who sends money home, is there to work, and not much else
November 20, 2025 at 2:58 AM
Also yeah plus size is ridiculously underserved
