Then look at the surface of Mars.

Then look up to the top right.

Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.

Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.

That's Earth.

This is, perhaps, my favorite single thing that I’ve learned on this app. So I’m reupping for another year.
Our son made a biblically correct angel cookie today.

Worth noting that in the original Greek version of the Bible, the angel didn't say, "Be not afraid." It more accurately translates as something like, "Please stop screaming."

I went to law school just outside Boston (not there, Boston College). My first interaction with a judge of any sort was when Judge Young forced lawyers to come to our law school and do a motions session so that 1L’s could see the law in action, something I think he did for all local law schools 1/

Judge Dale Ho dismisses charges against Eric Adams WITH prejudice—denying the Trump administration leverage over Adams—and has harsh words for DOJ's corrupt bargain, which is "fundamentally incompatible with the basic promise of equal justice under law."

@abeeinthebonnet.bsky.social we talked on the old site about your Kobo. I’m back in the market for one. Do you use Libby? If so, how’s the user experience?

I wondered about this possibility a few weeks ago. If the court is required to dismiss this indictment, then a dismissal with prejudice seems to be the most appropriate course.
Paul Clement, in his role as amicus ("friend of the court") to Judge Ho, has filed a brief stating that the case against Eric Adams should be dismissed *with* prejudice, rather than without prejudice as the DOJ had proposed.

Just in case I someone who follows me isn’t law adjacent: Executive orders do not make new laws. This will have real consequences, but unless Congress makes this happen English is not the official language. That is an important distinction that bears repeating each time this happens.
BREAKING: President Trump expected to sign an executive order to make English the official U.S. language for the first time in history, according to a White House official. nbcnews.to/43gRPGH

Keep your eye on the ball:

The real reason for this is that the Trump administration wants to get rid of disparate-impact liability under federal civil rights laws for states and entities required to provide language access to people with limited English proficiency.

Think hospitals, courts, etc.
“In its nearly 250-year history, the U.S. has never had a national language at the federal level. Hundreds of languages are spoken in the U.S., the byproduct of the country’s long history of taking in immigrants from around the world.”

Somehow I have a few hundred new followers. No clue how, but nice to meet you all.

I’m a solo appellate lawyer in California. I’m a generalist so I get to do a bit of everything.

I’m terrible at social media, but I learned much from everyone at the other place and look forward to the same here.
