It gets worse. While (a few) households save up the megabucks, Government does the same! The NZ Govt is not in debt according to any sensible measure. So, Govt and wealthy households stack up savings while our infra falls apart, kids go hungry, teeth go rotten, etc. Make it make sense. [2/n]

MSD have been delaying their December benefits data release due to data processing issues but they shared headline numbers yesterday. If the data is correct, this is a huuuge increase. We now have nearly 1 in 7 adults on a working age benefit. Link in ALT. (🧵 1/n)

What if polluters could demand a payout just for being told to stop polluting? That’s what the Government is planning in its rewrite of the RMA. New Zealanders should never have to pay companies to stop polluting drinking water, cutting down forests killing wildlife.
The Polluters Get Paid Plan: AKA Regulatory Relief / Regulatory Takings
How the Government is pushing an extreme idea that would block environmental protection and reshape our democracy.

In the weekend we were at an older relative's house, and I could not BELIEVE how bloody comfortable their big leather armchairs were. Unbelievable!!! I am old, I want comfort 😭 But I don't want to sit by myself - is there such a thing as a comfy couch? Like really comfy?

The present US regime won't keep any "deal" it signs, but instead regards making such a deal as a sign that you are a mark who can be intimidated. Dealing with them is simply stupid and pointless.

It's weird that a news organisation ran a poll asking if the founding document of our country had "too much" influence on how the government opererates.

What will they ask next, does the Bill of Rights Act give us too many rights?

Yup also heading that way right here 😭 Let's rebuild, urgently!!
One of the great British tragedies of recent decades is the collapse of its university system. Wrecked by disastrous Govt policy experimentation followed by neglect, and a totally incompetent, vindictive executive class. Utterly fucked now. Well done pricks.

Mystifying quote from the NZ Listener (yes I hear you, there's the problem right there, etc) but I do think it needs questioning. History will show Greens were nothing but consistent for 20 or 30 years in terms of well researched policies but commentariat narratives are stronger than the evidence.

Fantastic information here about Mauao. And a conclusion: "In an election year, New Zealanders should demand ... a government-wide commitment to climate risk reduction, including binding emissions cuts, fully funded adaptation plans, and a national programme to stabilise vulnerable landscapes" 💚

Yes it the scientists' fault for being so goddam right about everything
Can't wait for his 'Yes, it's climate change' moment in about 10 years when his own house is on fire and where he says if scientists hadn't been so annoying about it he might have done something about it sooner

A deliberately gutted, silenced media is a very dangerous position for a country to be in a few months out from an election that will determine the foreseeable future for this country.
There won’t be any other chances to undo the erosion described above, or prevent further degrading of our values.

Vandals. This government are irresponsible vandals
We had funding for these types of actions. It was the Climate Emergency Response Fund but the government closed that in 2024 so now there is no dedicated funding to prepare for future floods, slips, fires and other climate disasters www.treasury.govt.nz/information-...
The Climate Emergency Response Fund
The Climate Emergency Response Fund is now closed. At Budget 2024, the Government confirmed its decision to close the Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

So the more temperature increases, the more frequent flooding and slips will be. Emissions reductions are needed now but there are other steps that can be taken to identify vulnerable areas and improve reinforcement or move structures as appropriate.
