Update: almost done. The red bits are advertising; the yellow bits need validation. 40-something pages to go...

50 years ago today thousands crammed into Parliament grounds in Wellington at the end of a 1100 km historic Māori land march from Te Hāpua in the far north led by Ngāpuhi leader Whina Cooper to protest against the continuing loss of Māori land. #TeRōpūOTeMatakite 🏳️

6000 blank votes on the Māori ward poll in Horizons with a 1000 preliminary gap between no and yes was embarassing. But glad to see it shifting on the specials.

On prelim results Palmy now has 2 Green and 1 Labour. Yesterday it was 1 Green, 2 Labour. Either way a slight shift right with Fitzgerald elected. Could change again on specials as it’s pretty close.

I think the Greens can be relied upon to stand strong on this.

The real question is whether Labour can be relied upon to boost its vote sufficient to get them back into power. Because that's very much on them. The Greens and TPM will do their bit.

But again: it doesn't matter what they say, because we all know the Greens will be running climate policy, and strong action will be (part of) the price of coalition.

They're undoing this, and bring agriculture into the ETS immediately, or they won't be in government. Simple.

here's what they could have said:

"if everyone did what national just did, this world would dry a death in 30 years. we used to fear for the world our grandkids grew up in, but now we're not even certain that our kids will have drinking water. National is taking your future and leaving you barren"

Columnist's curse. If you have to write x hundred words a day, it rots your brain.

Or you can just bypass the paywall and not pay them.

But terrible news for Australian big energy companies. And you can see why our big energy companies don't want it to happen here.

Sounds like an excellent place to get react quotes to National's weakening of methane targets.

I’m sick of RW govts trying to separate “the unions” from their members.

“The unions” can’t take strike actions without balloting members. “The unions” aren’t forcing members to strike; they can’t. Members are voting to strike, because of shite offers from this govt.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon blames unions for ongoing strike action
"I think people are getting sick of unions prioritising the politics over patients," Christopher Luxon says.

Yeah, no commitment to fix it.

OTOH, their position is ultimately going to be dictated by the Greens, so does it matter what they say?

this is a nice rendering by @nickevershed.bsky.social but, er, it definitely shows coal power output remaining persistently high even as renewable energy grows, which feels like a problem

www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...
a hand-drawn chart showing renewable energy griwing but coal output remaining stagnat for the past three entire years because demand itself has been growing oddly fast

well, I've watched the TV version, which was great, and the TV drama about Mitford herself, which was also great. But the core problem is that there are so many good books, and only a limited amount of time, so tragic choices must be made.

One of the symptoms of the 'resource curse' is that Govt becomes captured by one industry. In NZ that is dairy. Methane is the dominant GHG for NZ but it is now exempt from prices or regulations to cut it, which means all other sectors have to carry the weight of emissions reductions.

This should be the story from the left. Again, and again, and again. The country is getting richer, but the majority of people are not.

Remember the old rightwing argument that all we needed to do was put a price on climate emissions and let the market do its thing? Well the necessary step was for the Govt to put a price on emissions. The current far right NZ Govt just announced it will never put a price on emissions.
