Just got back from 10 hours of canvassing for Zohran in Manhattan, some things really stand out compared to the last few months since the primary. First, *lots* of people have already voted, and nearly all the ones I talked to who did had voted for Zohran. Cuomo voters don’t even say his name.

Also it's important not to make assumptions about why the person can't see the image.

You're not trying to imagine what you would want to know if you were blind.

But you still need to make your alt text as accessible to screen reader users as possible.

It can be really hard and just overwhelming if you don't realize that the goal of alt text isn't actually to describe the image. In most cases you just want to say what you would want or expect people who can't see the image for whatever reason to get out of it.

Martha shared this in a workshop I took several years ago and I've never forgotten. Since Trump was re-elected, I've thought of it so often when trying to understand the cruelty unleashed.

Anna Ornstein is a psychiatrist and a self-psychological psychoanalyst who has spent her life studying genocide - and for good reason. A cousin by marriage to my in-laws, she was in Auschwitz as an adolescent - with her mother, my mother-in-law who was near to her in age, and my grandmother- in-law. When the war ended, she moved to Germany and reunited with the love of her life, Paul Ornstein. They attended medical school there and received their initial psychiatric training. Their patients were Nazis. Their classmates were Nazis. Their teachers were Nazis.

And Anna makes this point: None of those she encountered were sociopaths, or psychopaths. They were people who were desperate for an admiring authority figure, who would tell them that he would love and fight for them, protect them and allow them to bask in his light as an extension of him. The temptation that they succumbed to came in the form of the promises of a powerful and devoted parent.

That was it. That was the simple hole that Hitler offered to fill to tempt people into horrific acts of cruelty and complicity.

There is only one real and sustainable solution to all of this, and that is an organized faculty. I mean that in labor sense: faculty across the UC must unionize. It has been demonstrated that Faculty Association members, not administrators, have had the courage to due the Feds, and our own bosses.

The bill was defeated 48 to 43 this week, with Greens voting alongside the government. One B.C. and three Independents voted with the Conservatives.

“The level of prescription in the bill and its focus on shame-based education does not align with our provincial evidence- based compassionate approach,” said MLA Darlene Rotchford, who voted against the bill.

Sadly, this mindset is common among faculty, too. At my own university, with 25-30% of tenured faculty under threat of retrenchment, lots of professors are saying, "Well, you know, they're our employer. They can do that and we shouldn't complain."
