Cosigned, although Poilievre entering another election with a net -58 approval rating does feel like interesting territory for me, and another loss would virtually guarantee him getting turfed next year.
Canadian politicians better figure stuff out and negotiate because I'm sure I'm not the only one who's disgusted by the thought of another election already! Poilievre needs to get his security clearance and stop lying, I bet he wants us to not bother to vote, only way he can win #cdnpoli

it's utterly wild how the Heritage Foundation president talks about other people

if you found a guy talking like this outside, you'd probably call the cops

Imagine if Canada was investing in research and universities, instead of burning everything down.
A poll from the journal Nature found that 75% of researchers in the U.S. are considering leaving the country. That includes a man who’s been dubbed the "Mozart of Math." (This PBS story on the scientific brain drain is heartbreaking & ominous for medicine, imo.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLvO...

Just got back from 10 hours of canvassing for Zohran in Manhattan, some things really stand out compared to the last few months since the primary. First, *lots* of people have already voted, and nearly all the ones I talked to who did had voted for Zohran. Cuomo voters don’t even say his name.

Also it's important not to make assumptions about why the person can't see the image.

You're not trying to imagine what you would want to know if you were blind.

But you still need to make your alt text as accessible to screen reader users as possible.
It can be really hard and just overwhelming if you don't realize that the goal of alt text isn't actually to describe the image. In most cases you just want to say what you would want or expect people who can't see the image for whatever reason to get out of it.

And for the life of me I cannot understand why so many people side with the corporations on this massive rights infringement, so they can avoid a little bit of inconvenience in their own lives. When has that ever been the right thing to do?

Martha shared this in a workshop I took several years ago and I've never forgotten. Since Trump was re-elected, I've thought of it so often when trying to understand the cruelty unleashed.

The facial expressions of the woman next to Carter are pure gold, especially at the end of the clip
TAPPER: Where is President Trump right now?

REP. BUDDY CARTER: He's in Asia. He's negotiating trade deals. He's negotiating world peace.

TAPPER: Well, he's at Mar-a-Lago technically right now.

Covid is a civil rights issue and human rights issue, period. You have the right to a safe workplace. Without reasonable precautions like upgraded air filtration and masking, covid makes the workplace patentl unsafe. Failure to address it is ubiquitous. That does not make it any less wrong.

There is only one real and sustainable solution to all of this, and that is an organized faculty. I mean that in labor sense: faculty across the UC must unionize. It has been demonstrated that Faculty Association members, not administrators, have had the courage to due the Feds, and our own bosses.

Union president told me members are actually ending their membership because they think the administration is right to get rid of their colleagues and the union wrong to fight. (And not just Business faculty, who mostly aren't members!)

Sadly, this mindset is common among faculty, too. At my own university, with 25-30% of tenured faculty under threat of retrenchment, lots of professors are saying, "Well, you know, they're our employer. They can do that and we shouldn't complain."
These same administrators have somehow completely lost the plot, and bought into the belief that universities can and ought to be run like hierarchical businesses with administrators as management and faculty as employees. This relationship is upside down.

“Humans can just go get manual labor jobs if desk jobs are repaired with AI” is both not going to suffice to provide enough jobs and is also going to result in massive societal anger because manual labor jobs often *are terrible*, which is why people have worked hard to avoid them for generations.
Even if society provided the food/shelter level needs for everyone, humans also need to perform useful work just for basic fulfillment. The vast majority of people cannot sit around all day letting AI and robots do everything.

(The definition of “useful work” here is malleable but still essential)

Your regular reminder that the number of trans kids using puberty blockers to delay puberty is tiny, and the vast majority of prescriptions for the medication in children and adolescents are used to delay precocious puberty in cisgender kids.
Because it’s cis kids.
The NHS will quite casually give cis kids whatever treatment they need, even PBs👇
No trials. No concerns about side effects. No moral panic.
