Last year, California had one of its driest wet seasons on record, fueling devastating wildfires around Los Angeles. This year saw the wettest start to the water year in southern California in over 20 years, driven by 'atmospheric rivers' like this one. Link to article in comments. #ClimateForUs

My latest @newscientist.com column for subscribers and library users is about how galaxies are gonna shine in 2026!

"I am pretty thrilled about the prospect of so much new galaxy data. But the funny thing about my own excitement is that I wasn’t sold on galaxies in the early stages of my career." πŸ”
I'm calling it – 2026 is going to be the year of the galaxy
We are going to be getting a lot of exciting new information about galaxies in 2026, says Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, who can't wait to see what it can tell us

Interesting trend over time (Google Trends).

Blue = Martin Luther King Jr.
Red = Civil Rights

Looks like MLK very clearly peaks on his day each year, with a growing "lag" effect for civil rights, followed by a little continued bump for a few months from Feb-May, followed by a drop back to neutral.

This bobtail squid burrowing into the sand is already adorable, but please watch till the very end!

It sticks out its little arms and earnestly sprinkles sand over itself πŸ¦‘π“‚ƒβ—Œπ“ˆ’π“

If you have to use β€œkind of” twice in a sentence as a qualifier might want to rethink what you’re doing.

Also, the β€œtrain first, ask questions later” flys for them now because worst case they end up with a copyright lawsuit. Applying the same attitude to say medical diagnoses/treatments, much worse

Prisoner’s Dilemma (non-zero sum). Round 1 best choice is always to defect mutually. Not defecting, on average you get a worse outcome, so a rational player will always choose to defect. Round 2+, best move is to mirror your opponent. Conversely, poker is a zero sum game (amount won = amount lost).

*Bloop*
Here is a video of a frozen creek that had begun to thaw, and the water was flowing beneath the thin ice on top. I took this because it was soothing and wonderfully bloopy and I wanted to listen to it for hours. You are all welcome to enjoy it, too. Let your brain settle here and rest for a moment.

I like the idea we can’t pin down dark energy/matter because it is (or has been) β€œevolving”. Implies a high degree of informational complexity.

The world feels rough right now

So please enjoy this shrimp, filmed off Cozumel, Mexico. It may be a larval reef shrimp, but we don’t know what species or how long it lives or what it eats. The world is still full of wonder and beauty and mystery.

Yesterday we started #kakapo artificial insemination for the season. We do this to help maintain genetic diversity, with a potential additional benefit of improving fertility. We inseminated Esperance, who mated naturally a few nights ago. #conservation #parrots #birds

Jellyfish sleep, which is already bizarre given they have no brains. DNA damage accumulates in their neurons when jellyfish are awake, and it gets repaired when they sleep. This might be something fundamental, evolutionarily, to the role of sleep. πŸ§ͺ🌊
