*ahem* now for a professional one.

I am excited to announce the publication of The Digital 'Anon', a new digital edition of Virginia Woolf's final, unpublished essay drafts which makes this remarkable corpus available as an OA resource.

It is available here: www.digital-anon.com.

Have we considered that the parents just have bad vibes, etc.?
People are very hard on young people on here, lack of critical thinking, lack of responsibility etc, and then you see something like this and it all makes a different kind of sense.

While not a medical doctor, Dr Pepper does hold a PhD in neoclassical literary theory and thus deserves our respect

King shit (gender-neutral).
I heard a story about a female academic giving a paper at the IHR who, after receiving a long and aggressive question from a senior male professor, simply leaned back with her hands behind her head and replied “Oh, do fuck off.”
One of my colleagues went to a seminar at Berkeley and when someone asked a question Derrida brushed it off saying ‘what you ask may be important but it is not interesting’.

Jesus, this is a horrific prediction. How is this kind of systemic collapse not an issue for government?
'David Maguire and Alex Bols, vice-chancellor and chief of staff respectively at the University of East Anglia, updated their prediction made last autumn that 10,000 jobs could be lost in 2024-25, claiming this same amount could in fact be lost every year going forward.' 1/3
UK universities ‘could cut 10,000 jobs every year’
Academics claim changes made to higher education system a decade ago have divided sector into ‘winners and losers’, with government-imposed limits on income exacerbating financial challenges

Move fast and smelt rings
My rule of thumb is if the company is named after something in Lord of the Rings, it’s almost certainly evil.
Since its founding in 2017, Anduril Industries has become one of the hottest companies in a crowded field of defense-tech startup.

Its fast-moving approach comes with its share of setbacks.

having gone to university as the last cohort of the 3k/year system never fails to give me a brief taste of that "last chopper out of Saigon" feeling boomers and, to an extent, Gen Xers have been getting for most of the past fifteen years or so
Student loan repayment thresholds frozen for a further three years.

More debt burden falling on graduates.

And even more reason to cut university places by 20-30%.

Star Trek Phase II

(Not a movie but let me have this)
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Efficiency is at the forefront of my teaching practice. Especially when I get a roomful of students in floods of laughter about rotary printing presses and c19–20th American copyright law. Pure, uncut efficiency.
"A system built on specialisation, efficiency", that right there is the death knell for the current university system in the UK, if (big if) government pushes it through. They actively don't want HE to grow, they will intervene, apparently, to help it shrink.

per this morning's education committee.

Never mind that they're paying a shitload just to come to welcoming, progressive, Global Britain to study. They're keeping universities afloat, helping local economies. But yeah, paint your fucking red cross all over education. Keep them all out. Extinguish the idea of 'students' while you're at it.
With Rachel Reeves reportedly set to apply a new tax on tuition fees paid by overseas students, most Britons support such a move at the previously mooted level of 6%

Oppose: 18%

Multiple someones in the highest level of government are going to have a very hard time indeed when they find out the hard way that universities are anchor institutions for towns and cities pretty much everywhere.

Wonder who's going to be holding that particular hot potato?

'Could'? Surely 'will'.
