This is the one and only good thing that George W Bush did as president. It has saved millions of lives at very little cost. Why pause it—for a period long enough to cause major damage and death? Because you want (those) people to die.
Trump Pauses Disbursements to Program Supplying H.I.V. Treatment Worldwide
Pepfar, which is estimated to have delivered lifesaving treatment to as many as 25 million people in 54 countries, faces a funding delay of as long as 180 days.

"God is a somewhat powerful being who is nevertheless endangered by beer brand endorsements" is Evangelical "theology" summed up pretty well

Eric Trump: "We're saving Christianity. We've saving God. We've saving the family unit. We're saving this nation. I mean, DEI is out of the window, Benny. You no longer have Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem. You no longer have Budweiser going woke as hell. All of this is dead."

If it's just status quo bias, that's a problem, but I think there can be a value in skepticism about change, because we also have difficulty understanding very complex systems and the way their parts are interrelated.

The Pillar published an interview with the priest from the eucharistic procession to the ICE facility and he called Barron, Dolan, and Paprocki all white nationalists lmfao

The use of AI to marionette a woman whose tortured existence was spent trying to carve her own life and identity out of the space men forced her into is both damningly macabre and a surprisingly perfect encapsulation of the problems with this ghoulish use of technology.

I seem to recall that it was the biggest 1st Amendment attack in American history when the Biden admin alerted social media companies to some content and said "hey does this violate your policies?" Will Matt Taibbi, Michael Shellenberger and (lol) CBS News Editor in Chief Bari Weiss call this out?
Tweet from Pam Bondi:

Today following outreach from
@thejusticedept
, Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target
@ICEgov
 agents in Chicago.

The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs. The Department of Justice will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement.

Found out a younger colleague died yesterday. He was the brightest light and an inspiration to students. A beautiful man in every way. Talked to him last spring when he was teaching a class on the sociology of dying and he was both resigned and joyful: "I'm living what I'm teaching!"
But, fuck!

Anyone familiar with the political culture of the Trumpian GOP will not be surprised by this reporting on today's Young Republicans, but all decent human beings will be appalled by it.

POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

Sometimes you just gotta cope with local mythos. “Kings Sometimes” is true but doesn’t evoke Paul Revere exactly.

Like when the pope / the Vatican says “always.” That usually signals the pope is about to creatively reinterpret history but that’s the mythos and it does real work.

Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….
sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com
one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

oh I forgot one: Hanya Yanagihara's books are misery porn that creepily fetishize the lives of gay men and it is embarrassing that the New York literary establishment so embraces them.
