One of the adjustments I had to get used to when working in Taiwanese schools (and something that we thought really hard about in opening my current school), was whether to post each student's grade on an assessment publicly. There are ranked lists on classroom bulletin boards!
If we could turn down the pressure on students by like 20 percent East Asia style schooling would probably be good, but also we don't have the cultural prerequisites to not have parents causing enormous problems.
I don't mean grading them on a curve or posting their grades - although if we could do it in way that wasn't psychotic that would be good. But cohorts are a real thing and shape outcomes.
Also presenting to the class exposes relative ability/effort as does when people turn in tests.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:

At the base tier, Reuters costs the same or less than an NYTimes subscription, and I'm finding that I have a much more informative news reading experience since I switched.
Their headlines are often ridiculous, but the news articles are still generally good, and their investigative reporting as well. And one problem is that when ppl turn away from sources like NYT, what often takes its place is by far worse.

Reminds me of the James Connolly quote about the monarchy: if you want the privileges and comforts associated with the institution, you can't then also disavow its crimes, faults, and failings.
