I would love to see this conversation happen in real life. A girl with a hockey mask tied to the side of her head is sitting in a park talking to herself when a dog with a flower in his mouth comes up and berates her.

Tech Company: At long last, we have created the Torment Nexus

Savvy Consumer: It's not really much of a nexus, though; it's barely a coherent convergence

Tech Company: Ah, but the torment is way more stupid than any author could ever dream of

it intensely angers me every time I open a book PDF in Acrobat and the software reminds me that I’m reading a Long Document and gee, wouldn’t I prefer a summary instead

I am not a first grade child who requires the easy-reader version of big kid books, demon machine

First priority is better pay and conditions for workers, breaking up the stranglehold Amazon has over commerce, taxing billionaires into oblivion. Of course. But priority #105 should be making the brakes on delivery trucks less squeaky. The dogs of the world will thank us.

Everyone who bought my album on Friday basically just bought my mom a Christmas present
Thanks to three orders at the weekend I can afford to buy Christmas presents. Unfortunately I now no longer have any excuse. marswasrubbish.etsy.com

It's incredibly tempting to share posts that fit our worldview, but aggregator accounts that don't cite their sources are incredibly bad for the information environment.

At best they steal stories from outlets that actually did the work, and at worst they make stuff up or get stuff wrong.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

I was worried after I turned 39 that the mods would Logan's Run me off the website for 38 year-olds, but nope. They only seem to care if you post about the suffering of marginalized people in virtually all its forms

Reminders, as public health officials warn of a very bad flu season:

🧵

* Washing hands is not a strategy for a respiratory virus. N95s, ventilation, air filtration -- especially in hospitals.

* We should have been cleaning indoor air with the same effort we put into cleaning drinking water.

So that's the lesson that pops up for me with AI stuff--when evaluating now, I look at whatever the focus is NOT on.

This isn't to say AI won't eventually be good enough to smooth out everything, but right now it can't. The tells are outside what the video/image wants you to focus on.

I didn't see the AI dog video but in learning to up my AI radar for images and how to spot what's off (or to realize what I subconsciously picked up on when my brain flags it as fake), what I realized is, it reminds me of is a lesson from when I did a forensic psychology course several years ago.

Gotta say, it's pretty fucking offensive to "confirm I'm human" by clicking AI generated images, especially when you tell me I got it wrong. CLICK ALL BAGS? THAT UNHOLY LUMP IS NOT A BAG. FUCK YOU AND THE DIGITAL SLOP YOU RODE IN ON.

You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

I'm not sure it's in the self interest of America's tech bro billionaires to suggest that we bring back public executions to punish the most destructive people in our society.
A Palantir billionaire just called for public hangings.

“It's time to bring back masculine leadership to protect our most vulnerable,” writes Joe Lonsdale.

This is where Silicon Valley authoritarianism is heading:

Now that it's done, it's hitting me how long it's taken to complete this journey. This was supposed to be one album, a study in a "fake genre," that I first had the vague notion for around the end of 2007. traiken.bandcamp.com/album/heartl...

My new album is and industrial metal noisescape, and uses field recordings such as wind chimes on the back porch and a broken dryer in the basement. It’s a very covid-safe, even agoraphobic, approach to finding interesting sounds to mangle. traiken.bandcamp.com/album/heartl...
