I’m just really impressed that it got through 80’s Nintendo of America censorship!

This is an exact encapsulation of why I moved to Bluesky.

No amount of handwringing in the Atlantic about how I owe some eternal Promethean suffering to the discourse is going to make me stay on a site I hate, that stopped doing anything for me professionally years ago.
Well – no. Bluesky may or may not be, as one centre-right friend who felt unwelcome put it, “self-righteous island”. But the idea that’s why we went is nonsense. That I’ve largely stopped posting on a site that’s done more to shape my career and social circle than the rest of the internet combined is less about avoiding rival opinions (I love arguing with people who are wrong!) than with the fact the site simply became unusable. It stopped generating the things (good jokes, interesting debate, clicks) I wanted; it became extremely good at generating the things (racists, pornbots, racist pornbots) I did not.

Oh yeah - was very worried about those at one point

In Yoshi's Island, a cave background sparkles, but only when Yoshi moves. This is achieved in an inventive way by making many 1-pixel "pinholes" in the background through which a field of stars is visible. The parallax motion shows the stars intermittently, creating sparkles.

Somehow the problems of the world seem a tiny bit smaller when you’re playing a cozy, survival game about a mouse trying to make it through the winter 😌🤍

This is a heck of a post to see the semester that one of my animation students has said that they specifically want to work on prehistoric animals

I started How Pac-Man Eats, which does a good job of citing lots of different games from different periods. It does still do the Atari thing, but it made me think back to HOW MANY games studies texts have much more limited game citations (with a few actually misidentifying games)

I truly don’t get the appeal of podcasts having to be video now. Podcasts are at their very best when you’re doing something else, working out or playing videogames etc, and no good podcaster has ever been someone who should be shown on screen that’s just not how that works. It’s a goblin job.

And if anyone is like “come on it was never that bad - I had to sift through A LOT of this kind of slop in the 2010’s curating the SAAM Arcade. People copy/pasting their academic papers into the “tell us about your game” field was the reason for the 300 word limit

They’re also terrible as models for serious/transformational games: “YOU ZAP THE SPACE INVADER BUT INSTEAD OF AN ALIEN, ITS CAPITALISM! DONT YOU GET THE METAPHOR?!?!” The asst. prof yells at you, beating you with the 120 page paper you must also read to understand the nuances of the “experience”

Started on a new game studies book and I’ve gotta say…can we stop using Atari games as case studies? I love my Atari, but saying “we’re basing models for how to analyze all games based on this 1981 game with 1 mechanic” is why game studies utterly fails at actually grasping the medium a lot of times
