To everyone who says, "But this won't matter": *MAKE IT MATTER.*

You have that power! This is not inside baseball and your friends and neighbors will likely be appalled. And if they're *not* appalled, don't be cynical yourself. Take the lead, give the cue.

As I've noted, central to Stephen Miller's propaganda is the claim that the Chicago complex targeted by ICE was "filled" with Tren de Aragua "terrorists."

Now @jacobsoboroff.bsky.social reports that the number of TdA members netted in that raid is down to *one.*

Jesus christ. AI coding platform Augment code had to jack up prices because 22.5% of their users were spending 20x of what they paid, and even after raising the prices, they're still running at a loss.
reddit.com/r/AugmentCod...
A handful of users abused the system so all are getting punished.

This isn't about a few high-usage users. The reality is that approximately 22.5% of our users are consuming 20x what they're currently paying us. This isn't sustainable for us to continue delivering the quality service you expect. We have built some very powerful tools and we don’t want to impose artificial limits on what’s possible, but we do need to be able to charge in proportion to the use customers are getting from our platform. Developers are always going to push their tools to their limits, and we encourage that — and we need to be able to charge for it appropriately, too.

You only care about professional developers.

Our core focus is on building the best AI coding agent for professional software engineers and their teams. If people outside of that group are finding value with Augment, they are very welcome to use the product, but we’re not prioritizing features or solutions that non-developers might need, and frankly, there are plenty of vibe coding/low code/no code solutions available on the market that will better serve those customers.

You are just squeezing money out of us at 20x margin.

20x margin sounds great, but isn’t the reality for AI tools: the vast majority are running at a loss, including us, while we work to build sustainable, long-term businesses.

Lots of us have great-grandparents names who were absolutely changed when they came here, and when people say otherwise, they're assuming your great-grandparents name was in the Roman alphabet.
robynelyse.bsky.social
Now, more than ever, it's important to understand why so many the myths we tell ourselves about immigration are actually very harmful.

First of all, your great-great-grandparents names *were not changed* at Ellis Island. No one there had the authority to do that.
tmorman.bsky.social
Yeah, and non-Romance alphabets are a thing, jeez. This person's very certain insistence that no intake person at Ellis Island could *possibly* have made *any* changes at all to immigrant names when writing them down in American English is just plain bizarre.

When you say "authority," do you mean that there was some sort of binding authority requiring the people doing intake at Ellis Island to faithfully record the spelling and pronunciation of people's last names in accordance with some other document? How was it enforced?

If you don’t see the link between ICE and the IDF, you haven’t been paying attention. We are being asked to accept a world where whole communities are made disposable and marked for disappearance. If we accept that for anyone, no one is safe anywhere.

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

Fortunately it's not super common, but I definitely get clients who tell me they can't post bond because they can't call their families without getting the number from their phone, which they can't access while incarcerated

not that I'm trying to put anyone on blast here, but an employee of mine at my last job caught a DUI last year. he found out the hard way what all young people need to know: if you don't have any phone numbers memorized, you literally have no way to get in touch with ANYONE while you're in jail.

if you are ever arrested or on your way to the ICU or operating room, you are going to need to have someone's phone number memorized if you want someone to know and/or need emergency help!

I don’t think you can “abuse” your right to protest
djbyrnes1.bsky.social
Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson's full statement, in which she says she will sign an EO permitting protest "only at the safety zone located at the ICE facility on Beach Street," is up on the village's website.

"There are too many protesters abusing their right to protest," Thompson says.
Image text:

Broadview Shrinks Protest Safety Zones

The following statement can be attributed to Village of Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson:

“The protests at the ICE facility on Saturday night degenerated into chaos. There were 15 arrests, and 10 of those were around the age of my own daughter. As a mother and a mayor, I am mad. Broadview didn’t choose to have the ICE facility in our community. But it’s here. And so are Broadview residents. There are too many protesters abusing their right to protest. Too many are raising their fists rather than their voices, creating chaos at the expense of the people who call Broadview home. Broadview residents lack the protestors’ privilege to return to calm, quiet neighborhoods for undisturbed rest.

Therefore, I have issued a new executive order, in consultation with the Illinois State Police and Cook County Sheriff, that permits protests only at the safety zone located at the ICE facility on Beach Street.

There will no longer be a designated protest safety zone at 2000 South 25th Avenue between Lexington and Fillmore.

Additionally, it has been only God’s grace alone that a protester has not been struck and killed by a motorist on 25th Avenue given how frequently protesters dash onto this busy, four-lane street. This new
measure will provide for both the serenity of residents and safety of protestors.

As I have repeatedly said, I respect, support, and defend the protesters’ free and – peaceful – speech against the outrageous injustices and deplorable unprovoked chemical arms attacks by ICE agents against American citizens, journalists, and ministers that put Broadview police and firefighters in harms’ way.

Nevertheless, my first priority is to defend public safety and the residents who live here and people who work here. They deserve stability, safety, and respect, a quality of life that is currently being denied to them. They deserve the love and kindness that they expect by being Broadview residents.”

MEET THE QUEENS OF 1930S BALTIMORE!! Come to @theclubcarbaltimore on Thursday, Oct. 16 to get a brand new zine & learn some drag history, followed by an amazing lineup of queens hosted by @stealya_manz!THE PANSY CRAZE was a nationwide obsession with drag during the Jazz Era of the 1920s and 30s. Some queens headlined shows on Broadway, others made it big in Hollywood. But the biggest local events were happening in West Baltimore, where Black drag queens were hosting multiple “Pansy Balls” each year. It’s time to tell their story.—-Pansy balls were held throughout the country, but got shut down by police in DC, Philly, and other cities–Baltimore’s never were. And while most newspapers refused to cover “immoral” events full of queer people, one sent reporters and photographers: The Baltimore Afro-American (now the AFRO). Their articles weren’t exactly supportive. But together with the photos, they show a little bit of the slang, fashion, and lives of Black queens of the era. They even ran an article by one of the most popular queens in DC defending himself and other “Pansies.” More recently, the original pictures were found by the AFRO Archives, meaning you’ll be some of the first people in 90 years to see the queens in all their glamour and glory. After the zine release, there will be an incredible show hosted by Stealya Manz, featuring some of (modern) Baltimore’s most glamorous and talented queens!Proceeds will benefit @blaqequitybmore. Come hear about their incredible work and how you can support them! This event is supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council (msac.org).#lgbtqhistory #marylandhistory #mdartscouncil

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."
They Came for Our Neighbors. We Showed Up.
Before long, there were dozens, and then hundreds of people in the streets, watching and responding.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

Chicago journalist Debbie Brockman, who was thrown to the ground & handcuffed by ICE, has been released without charges

DHS said she assaulted an officer, but eye witnesses claim she didn’t

The lack of charges makes it clear that ICE is lying to try and cover up the fact that they attack the press

Failure to strictly regulate ICE in its primarily civil administrative purposes has allowed the government to treat them as nearly unregulated federal police with few guardrails. What you get from that is failed cops who want to stomp brown people. It is an insane amount of power for any police.

ICE agents should not have the authority to arrest individuals except in narrow circumstances, and never a citizen, and any effort to imbue them with general police authority should be reformed and stripped. They serve civil, administrative proceedings, primarily. Limit them accordingly.
