QUESTION: Why did it take so long to invent self-trimming wicks?!??
Candles have been used for thousands of years, but the self-trimming wick was only invented in the 1800s.
Was it dependent on some other technology or material? What took so long?
I am perplexed!

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

“These findings follow previous research which concluded that the more people learn about how AI works, the less they trust it. The opposite was also true — AI’s biggest fanboys tended to be those who understood the least about the tech.”
The More Scientists Work With AI, the Less They Trust It
A preliminary report shows that researchers' confidence in AI software dropped off a cliff over the last year.

We also took in this very friendly stray, a fluffy young calico who showed up so thin and hungry at Sunflower colony. No chip, but thankfully it doesn’t look like she’s ever had kittens. She’s so totally sweet. We didn’t really have room but with the impending nor’easter, we didn’t want her outside.

The homeowner told agents she would not allow them inside because the warrant they presented did not include her address and lacked a judge's signature.”

Explain to me why “conversion therapy” is banned in 28 countries and ABA is not, when they have the same creator (O. Ivar Lovaas) and utilize similar if not identical principles, techniques, and goals (forced assimilation).

Autism $peaks is the largest and most popular Autism organization (among allistics), who continues to be 100% in support of ABA. They have lobbyists who push ABA as the “gold standard Autism treatment.” It utilizes same practices as “conversion therapy,” which is currently banned in 28 countries.

ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) is the “gold standard” of “treatment” for Autism, and was created by the person as “Conversion therapy” (see Lovaas) with similar techniques and goals. It’s torture that continues to have widespread support and acceptance.

Got Dandy a new book. She’s already pretty accomplished in Physics, but, being self-taught, I thought this might give her more of the vocabulary so she can write up reports on her groundbreaking (and sometimes glass breaking) gravity experiments.

I hope this little dude never outgrows the part of his personality that says “if you see an open human hand, that’s where your tiny face should go”. He does it literally all the time. If I present my hand to him and he’s not super hyper (even if he is sometimes), he just puts his head there.

Monday bunday!

Just another Monday, oh joy of joys.

Peanut’s recommendations for today are stretching, relaxing and moving as much as you are able to.

Just because it’s Monday doesn’t mean you have to rush into things.

An attempted family picture, the best one I got out of multiple tries. 😆
A tuxedo mama cat and three kittens in their shelter kennel. Mama is reclining up top on a shelf, enjoying some time away from her children. A floofy white and grey kitten is sitting on some light green fabric and looking at the camera. A brown tabby kitten is standing still, but looking off to the side at random. A black kitten is looking down at the bright orange ball tower he's standing on, completely ignoring everything else.

Legacy is one handsome #cat! (Magnolia has a crush on him!) He can't resist playing when a wand toy or feather moves. He's still skittish with people, but enjoys chin scritches if approached slowly. Actually, he adores them!

Sure, Cocoa. It's not like I need my laptop or anything.

(Still very glad he's home, he went missing for a month and arrrghhhh)
A black cat, looming over me, with the tiniest blep. He looks weirdly like a British shorthair, even though he's 100% Manky Street Kitten. He is wide eyed and a bit weird looking, but he has excellent whiskers. He is sitting on my laptop.

The thing that is most devastating to me about the ongoing evisceration of the public health infrastructure in the U.S right is how little awareness of what's going on the majority of people in the general public have and the impact this will have on their health and safety.

Bedtime for Fergus and Jenny.
A beautiful grey and black tabby male kitten is shown on polka dot sheets posing innocently with a grey skeleton mouse. A beautiful brown tabby girl cat is shown trying to sleep in a white nightstand next to the bed where the not so innocent kitten is currently plotting ways to pounce on her instead of going to sleep.
