Part of the issue with people saying you can't cycle in winter/rain/wind/whatever is because they haven't tried and if they did they'd find out it's almost always fine but another is that we've normalised driving in unsafe conditions and, crucially, being expected to drive in unsafe conditions.

i think about this a lot.
when we loved in bayern we didn't have a car, and would have countless interactions - both verbal and non-verbal - with people of all ages.
that does not happen while driving.

A major way we avoid talking to another human being is by driving cars.
Are we heading for a world where no one ever needs to talk to another human being?
Self-service tills, apps for shopping and takeaways, silent hair salons, driverless taxis – why are we going to extreme lengths to avoid engaging with each other?

I had a direct experience of this a couple months ago biking on Coronado. The bike path along the silver strand and state highway 75 is cacophonous. 10 seconds after separating from the highway at the southern end I could hear birds chirping.

If we’re being honest, the biggest threat to urban livability isn’t density or height. It’s the noise, danger, pollution, and wasted space that comes from prioritizing cars above all other modes of transport.
