1)You may remember the articles criticizing liberal students for their hesitancy to make friends with conservative students—alleging that they were less open-minded than their conservative counterparts.

The potential for shit like this is one reason why groups like LUCE in Massachusetts urge people to report sightings to them so they and their partners can directly warn people. A decentralized network is a lot harder to shut down. No big tech company will be in ally in the fight against ICE.

At the request of the U.S. Department of Justice, a Facebook group used by nearly 80,000 people to report sightings of federal immigration agents in the Chicago area has been taken down by the social media giant Meta, Facebook’s parent company.
Facebook suspends popular Chicago ICE-sightings group at Trump administration’s request
The group, "ICE Sighting-Chicagoland," has been increasingly used in the last five weeks of President Donald Trump’s intense deportation campaign to warn neighbors that federal agents are nearby.

He had 3 albums but they were each universes unto themselves: intricate, magical, perfectly conceived and executed. A master craftsperson in the studio, with some of the best live shows the world has ever known. It was easy to call him the greatest living musician. A genius. RIP D’Angelo 🤍

AND that departments must retain draft and edit info! Huge news considering Axon’s product deliberately doesn’t retain info on what parts of the report were written by officers or AI.

As I read this, I keep thinking over and over again about the two major groups I see in politics and policy spaces: folks who take opinion polls as gospel and folks who see them as indicators of what people believe at the moment that can be *shaped* into something else.

we’ll see how his mayoral tenure shakes out but i am convinced that Mamdani has the juice. not just the charisma to win an election but the temperament to govern and the measured pragmatism of someone who genuinely believes what they’re saying and wants to accomplish real things.

What if the unidentified masked men with guns don't accept the validity of your papers?

Sounds like the perfect movie for the #MeToo age. Overreach imagined and come to life in the minds of men who scared themselves into embracing fascism as a result.

Fragile masculinity, indeed.

Do you really have any rights if they are openly saying they will just make up reasons to detain you?
thematthill.bsky.social
Wow. Greg Bovino admits on camera that his agents can detain people if you look scared, change your demeanor, or grip a steering wheel too tight.

As his unmasked agents walk around with large guns to scare you, they may arrest you just for that — even if you're a U.S. citizen.

White House staff should just make and show him an AI-generated video where he wins, fly him to Duluth and tell him it’s Oslo, and dare the New York Times to say anything more than “Experts disagree about whether Mr Trump was awarded the Nobel Prize”.

The Atlantic, the NYT, the Post, the Free Press, Persuasion ... god, so many others ... they did it. They participated in the destruction of norms against bigotry & now bigotry is running rampant, out in the open, at the highest levels.

Great work everyone.

It really can't be said enough: the goal of the "anti-woke" movement was always to destroy social norms against bigotry. And it worked. And there's a whole lot of purportedly "left" thinkers & commentators who helped it -- indeed, it couldn't have been done without them.

They should feel bad.

The conversation between Klein and Coates showed me that a lot of people who screech about “infighting” on the left aren’t aware of the fact that marginalized people have been forced to learn how to regulate their emotions during conflict, and so, are better able to hear what’s actually being said.

This is simultaneously not an especially radical theological belief and, politically speaking (especially in the U.S. context), quite a thing for Pope Leo to say. www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/266859/...
"Someone who says I'm against abortion but is in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life," the pope explained.
"Someone who says I'm against abortion but I'm in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don't know if that's pro life."

The cruelty is the point: ICE releases woman it had locked up for 10 days by shoving her out the door of its Burlington hole in the pouring rain, with no phone, 30 miles from home; she walked over to the Burlington Mall and begged for help at the Cheesecake Factory. www.masslive.com/news/2025/08...
ICE released this Mass. mom with no phone, 30 miles from home in the rain after detainment for a sealed marijuana conviction
Federal authorities refused to tell the Canton woman's husband or lawyer on what grounds she was being detained until shortly before her release.

What really stands out - in contrast to some recent SCOTUS opinions I could name - is that Judge Young is paying attention to the many interconnected ways in which this administration is trying to punish people who express disagreement

In this remarkable opinion, Judge Young concludes it violates the First Amendment for government to deport people because it dislikes their speech, and hopes to chill others from engaging in similar speech.

I'm skimming, but this paragraph stood out:
And there’s the issue of masks. This Court has listened carefully to the reasons given by Öztürk’s captors for masking- up and has heard the same reasons advanced by the defendant Todd Lyons, Acting Director of ICE. It rejects this testimony as disingenuous, squalid and dishonorable. ICE goes masked for a single reason -- to terrorize Americans into quiescence.

🚨This is a big deal: suburban chicago police launch an investigation into an ICE attack on local CBS news journalists.
vimiller.bsky.social
Broadview Police have opened an investigation into an attack from federal agents on a CBS crew at Broadview, per BPD Chief Mills.
The following statement can be attributed to Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills:

“The Village of Broadview Police Department has launched a criminal investigation into an allegedly unprovoked attack on a CBS Chicago TV news reporter’s vehicle on Sunday by a chemical munition fired from the direction of U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement detention facility. The victim declined medical attention. The Broadview Police Department expects the full cooperation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security into our criminal investigation.”

Which makes it a win win for them. They get to hurt universities, which they hate, and international students, who they also hate.
djvanness.bsky.social
A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.
