Christmas penguins always bothered me, as they live in the South Pole and most holiday lore takes place in the northern hemisphere. Friends and I have adopted the extinct Great Auk, Pinguinus impennis, as the official holiday "penguin", which we celebrate on the solstice. Merry Auksmas, everyone.

I had a realisation just now:

So many people probably got cheap Temu or Ali Express 'AI' toys for their kids and then will happily connect these to their home WiFi Christmas morning.

Dec 26 is about to be come International Identity Theft Day.

One of the reasons why I go so hard on science misinformation/disinformation, is that as a working scientist it is frustrating to see your research misreported to push an agenda.

For example, consider this piece of right-wing propaganda from The Telegraph that was just published

Important extra problem to “don’t cite if you haven’t read” issue with fake AI citations. Allowing AI generated content into research poisons the well: if a citation can be fake, then data can be fake, and the bastion of peer review has been flooded with shit. NOBODY has time to hold the shit back!
I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite
Do not cite an academic paper unless you’ve read it

"My most daring idea is to refuse."

Yes. Absolutely this.

And I feel like reading BARTLEBY prepared me for this moment.
"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

- @tressiemcphd.bsky.social with an absolute mic drop moment about AI bullshit.

Incredible words.
Listen to all of it!

We do not have to offer and I believe indeed should not offer any benefit of the doubt: Anything sold as "AI" should be presumed ineffective, exploitative, environmentally ruinous, bigotry-amplifying and otherwise until proven otherwise.

But let's turn that around: Anyone who wants to call what they are doing "AI" should be accountable for making clear why their product (or research) isn't in fact slop. That's on them. The rest of us do not need to hold space for that.

The proposed rule targeting healthcare for transgender and gender diverse people is cruel, and unnecessary. Under the law in WA, necessary healthcare for transgender people is lawful and legally protected. Proposed rules are not the law – nothing has changed in WA.

Binders are the ONLY safe way to hide your chest as much as possible. Without binders, transmasculine folks have historically used dangerous methods such as bandages or duct tape, which are very harmful. Binder technology has revolutionized life for transmascs. They really hate us so much.
In addition to this administration trying to kill kids, and they're also coming for our binders? OUR BINDERS.

Are estrogen receptors on cells that then send pain signals?

LOL no. Occam's Razor? Evolution never heard of her. www.sciencenews.org/article/fema...

The cis people not standing between them and trans people are not my friends and never will be.

You don't just owe them your acceptance, you owe them your support and love, and we see your silence and won't forgive you.
Cis people really have no idea how it feels to watch a regime hold a press conference to admit, on camera, the pogrom against trans people they've been waging for 11 months is not only real, but they're going to double down on genocide and try to wipe out all the children first.

Gender affirming care for trans people is safe, effective, and has a lower regret rate (4%) than almost any major medical procedure. It saves lives. These are facts. The right's talking-points are recycled "they are coming for your children!" scare tactics well over fifty years old at this point.
New research finds trans teens have high satisfaction with gender care
The survey published in JAMA Pediatrics showed that trans teens taking puberty blockers or hormones had very low rates of regret.
