I think I'll need to tape a sign to it, giving instructions for the next time.
We have a Navien brand combo-heater -- it heats the house, showers, taps -- and it forgets its settings when the power goes out. So, in the basement at night with wind noises outside, I discover that I need to change the setting from "zone pump" to "zone valve".
Adventures in spookiness. Power went out in the night, knocking out the heat. It could have been the intense winds that did it. Or the loud bang in the distance could have been a chipmunk dying to explode a power transformer. Still, the power coming back on didn't get us any heat... To the basement.

their plainly stated goal is to starve forty million people until they get what they want, which is to rip health care away from millions more

that this is too monstrous for most news organizations to tell the truth about does not change the facts
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

It’s very strange to repeatedly see Democratic “strategists” observe that the party is widely seen as focusing on identity politics—in spite of the Harris campaign largely avoiding them —and concluding this is a problem with party priorities and not with losing voters to misinformation.
According to wikipedia, "Nash famously never allowed guitars on any of his solo albums and singles. He turned down Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's offer to lay down a guitar track on his album Children of the Night."
So, what they're saying is, they're scraping the bottom of the barrel and will be spending their time on pointless explication fans don't care about.

Some see the mass appeal of today's rightwing politics in status anxiety, as formerly dominant groups resent their relative decline. It's illuminating to extend Du Bois's "psychological wage" to capture how right populists generate both demand for this wage & give themselves a monopoly to supply it.

“Tell your children who the cowards were.”
After nearly a week delay, I'm trying another distribution: Fedora. It strikes a good balance between the newness of software packages and stability. I think the software manager offers the widest selection I've seen. The default GNOME environment is obnoxious, but it can be fixed with extensions.

Today I learned:
“This is Spinal Tap” is the only movie on IMDB that’s rated on a scale from one to eleven.

Almost every major news story this week is about how the entire economy is now gambling, scams, bribes and theft.

It's white and wet. What more can I tell you?
And I tried CachyOS. Most of it was set up automatically, but I still had to manually edit my fstab. The default KDE environment didn't seem to have as many options as back in the day, and its behavior wasn't quite to my liking. The software selection was newer but fewer. Proton is amazing.
It's been a while since I've used Linux (turn of the century, running Window Maker on Slackware). I'm getting fed up with Microsoft so I'm trying Linux again. First, Linux Mint with Cinnamon. Everything's easy and it just works. Pleasant experience but the software packages aren't the latest.
