This will make the academic job market basically non-existent for non-US citizens. And job ads in Europe are down too. This will be a tough year to be on the market for many people. I encourage everyone to keep their eyes open for jobs posted in non-traditional channels.

Two new colleagues fortunately had applied shortly before and received h1b. But university now apparently saying for new searches to only consider people with existing work permits/citizenship

So today's Substack about the impact of tariffs concluded:

"in many ways the level of the tariffs is less important than the huge uncertainty Trump’s policies have created. And that uncertainty hasn’t abated at all."

Yes, tariffs are hurting us. No, Trump wasn’t right.

Doomscrolling break!
I imagine every historian has a list of Most Neglected Aspect of History. I welcome them in the replies. Here's a thread on my candidate:

The California steamship lines from 1849–1869, during the gold rush until the first transcontinental railroad's completion.

Also further evidence for recent rumors that they're going for 8 ships, rather than the initially planned 6...

Adding another one: Distributing public housing widely across cities, rather than clustering it in few areas.

Archival and experimental findings suggest this is a byproduct of people trying to differentiate themselves

Extra funding to attract US faculty and postdoctoral researchers to Heidelberg and other universities in Germany‘s southwestern state Baden-Württemberg (less cool than Berlin but prettier and, uh, richer).

And even less given that presumably inside the cost for these frigates somewhere is the cost of US-made AEGIS.
stephanmaurer.bsky.social
The projected 26b for the F127 might contain AEGIS though, no?
stephanmaurer.bsky.social
Worth noting though this only covers the $83b planned thru Dec 26 — so excludes US orders already placed (F-35s) or rumored for the more distant future (P-8s, more F-35s). So maybe not as big a paradigm shift in procurement as implied by the Politico article.
