Random facts I learned today: there has never been a Lutheran president. There were two Quakers: Herbert Hoover and Richard Nixon.

We tried to watch Nouvelle Vague last night and couldn’t get through it because the subtitles, which are in white type, blend often into the image behind it. Maybe it would be better on the big screen or watching it on an iPad or something. On our regular TV it was impossible (for middle age folk).

I'm in an album club, like a book club but for records. I got to pick the topic this month: music you got into after you read a review. And one of the most musically experienced members said he always kept his eye out for music that got widely divergent reviews—love and hate—they're usually the best

Approaching the annual crucial decision: Crisco or no Crisco. Using crisco makes the crust a thousand times easier to deal with (lard is a no-go with all the family vegetarians). But the taste of butter-only crust is vastly superior.

Interviewing someone and I heard the sound of an iPhone recorder beep. I asked the person if they were recording (I would have been ok with that, just like to know) and they said no. Is it possible Apple or some other entity is listening? I don't think this person would lie about recording.
