Shutdowns weren't a thing in the US either, until they were invented by the Carter administration. It's not some natural, immutable characteristic of the US system of government, although people (not the OP) talk about it that way.

Shutdowns weren't a thing in the US either, until they were invented by the Carter administration. It's not some natural, immutable characteristic of the US system of government, although people (not the OP) talk about it that way.
Generally I like Humble Bundle. But putting out a bundle called "modern scifi classics" with only white male authors in it in 2025 is not a good fucking look.

God this thread is exactly the hopeful emotional salve we all need to hear right now and also we need to be taking notes because it’s a great template for how we can successfully fight an ICE invasion when they come to our city.

This particular reply to THAT thread encapsulates why I felt such icks at the idea that we've not moved forward in SF since the 80s and "canon". No, YOU might not have moved forward, person who clearly isn't enjoying the more diverse flavour of SF. But WE have and we're loving the different voices.
and I AM aware of the connotations of diversity--I don't think this was intentional in the thread by any means, but we've started talking about the death of SF a lot more since women, queer ppl, and BIPOC started dominating awards

Very good and powerful piece, and what I needed to read this morning. Every time I open the news it feels like opening the door onto a horrible storm and I just want to hunker down by the metaphorical fireplace and hide til it's over. But that's not... actually a solution.

It’s not a waste to spend money in Texas or Kentucky. Or Missouri, or any other so-called “red” state. There are MILLIONS of people in these states. We aren’t ALL republicans. Being ignored makes people not vote. Being STEREOTYPED makes people not vote.
