I’m most excited to write James not being in the deepest pit of suicidal depression. Writing him happy & believing that it’s not just a fleeting second of happiness amidst The Horrors is so nice. :’)

I’ve also enjoyed writing Jayde’s brother, Robbie. Such a normal guy (genuinely).

I haven’t written any actual ghost stories yet, so the only ghosts in my work are a character’s trauma haunting them in various forms.

Jayde’s dreamscape doppelgänger (Sidetracked) sometimes has ghost vibes, and Daniel (Something Familiar) lowkey hallucinates his dead gf on occasion.

I considered including a few James POV scenes in Sunrise but ultimately decided against it bc the rest of the series is all Jayde’s POV. Plus, James knows a few secrets that Jayde doesn’t, and it would be jarring for him to think about it during what should be a fluff story. lol

Historically and still today, most great literature is self-published (“vanity”) or published by someone’s friend or a small press. You shouldn’t limit your reading to large presses b/c that’s not where stuff really “happens.”

One thing I haven’t seen reported about the ICE building protest: they have 10-20 costumes on a rack that anyone is free to use. Put it on, inflate it and protest!

tbh, I don’t think about story structure too deeply. As an adult writer, I’m aware of different story structures, and I have outlined a newer WIP using Save the Cat (sort of), but Sidetracked’s structure is…nebulous. I can technically split each book into 3 “acts”, but that’s all in hindsight. lol

This is…half-true, but I think marketing books & getting people to read them is just as hard (if not harder) than finishing a book is, and the time/effort spent on marketing makes writing more books even more difficult.

Matt did what he could. He would've helped if I let him. But he was never the type to push it. Back then, if I told him to back off, he'd give me space. If I ghosted, he'd let it be. But space isn't what I needed. Being alone just...made it worse. I'm glad you were able to see through my shit. Really owe you for that."

"James..." There are a lot of things I could say—a lot I want to say—but I don't wanna get too emotional and work myself up. So I laugh and lean on his shoulder. "Keep the house clean until I finish college, and we'll be even."

I decided to write Sunrise because I wanted to explore Jayde & James’ relationship once they’re no longer stuck in semi-delusional survival mode, but it turns out they’re intense ride or die even when their biggest problem is spending Christmas with Jayde’s (very chill) human family.

"Mm..." I look out over the sand, over the water. "I hope you know I think it was worth it." I laugh despite myself. "Not just the bonfire or the sand—but everything."

"Oh."

I look over to find him brooding.

"I mean it, James. Told you before I'd do it all over again. All of it. Just to be here with you, right here, right now. And I still feel that way. I've always thought you were worth it."

A pause. He watches the horizon. Then he sighs.

"Thanks." He meets my gaze with a faint smile. "I feel like I don't say that enough. I mean, there are a few things I'd change if I could, but I also…think it was worth it."
