Interesting thread. And she’s right that folks won’t remember the details, but they’ll remember how it made them feel. Folks aren’t just let down or irritated. A lot of people seem incandescently angry this time.
I think voters at large will very likely have trouble remembering details of chuck schumer selling out the aca by nov 2026. also I think in the next three months you're gonna see a lot of unlikely folks stopping by the dsa table at various no kings events

I made a Thai Pumpkin Curry last night for lunches this week. Guess what I just found on the counter? The can of pumpkin that I forgot to add to my Thai PUMPKIN Curry.
I wondered why it came out differently than I expected. 😆😆

Yes, Senator Kaine, we know. That’s why we’re mad at all of you. Unfortunately we’ve been down this road with you folks before; we know how you work.
🚨 Tim Kaine is saying the quiet part out loud - underscoring why anyone shouldn't be satisfied with any of the "no" statements or posts from Dem Senators.
If Dem Senators are truly disgusted with this save they should be calling on #SurrenderSchumer to step aside as the Leader immediately.

I’m sure they’ll have a change of heart by that big vote in December, right? RIGHT?! 🙄
UPDATE: The Senate votes 53-47 to shoot down the Baldwin amendment to extend ACA funds for 1 year. A party-line vote with every Republican rejecting it.
An important vote in this series: Tammy Baldwin’s proposal to extend ACA expiring funds for 1 year. It’s structured as a motion to table (i.e. scrap it from the amendment tree). But it’ll show the appetite (or lack thereof) in the Senate to address this issue.

It’s wild how people who don’t read are incapable of imagining that readers might read in public because we enjoy reading and we don’t particularly care who sees us.
Why do I read in public? Because I have some free time & nothing else to do.

“Internal recriminations” is too mild a term for what’s going on with the base right now. We’re not slapping wrists. We’re just issuing notice: If you’re going to fight “united” with us, you’re going to have to fight as hard as us or we’ll find someone who will. 🤷♀️
The sooner we get past internal recriminations and back to fighting united, the better off we all are — the likelier our victory next November.

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

They absolutely did bring it from zero to a major issue.
Then they folded.
I’m looking forward to the upcoming pieces full of anonymous GOP staffers laughing their asses off because Senate Dems really think getting a doomed vote was a win.

Oh @durbin.senate.gov is out on this surrender publicly and he is openly being contemptuous of the base - sounding like the coward he has always been.

I remember all the horror stories from pre-ACA times of people being tied to horrible jobs to keep their health insurance because they couldn’t get an individual plan and would die without it, and it is HORRIFYING to be seeing these exact same stories again less than 20 years later.

May not be their fault, but I can still be pissed at them for the way they’re handling everything. The two are not mutually exclusive.
The Democrats are not at fault for anything going badly in your life right now.

Do they have to come to the table? I’m no master negotiator, so someone’s going to have to walk me through the logic of how giving up your only leverage forces anyone to do anything.
Hassan: With the government reopening shortly, Republicans now finally have to come to the table. Or make no mistake, Americans will remember who stood in the way.

Agree.
Sen Hassan, asked what will happen if Republicans don't carry out the deal, "Well, shame on them."
This is not what people were mobilizing for on Oct 18.

maintain that there's a chunk of reflexive defense and rationalization of dem behavior that is not out of fandom but out of fear, wanting, needing, something badly to hang faith on. an extremely understandable urge.
but to actually deal with the problem, you need to accept that it is there, first.

It’s amusing to see how carefully the Senate Dems trotted out a bunch of retirees and folks not up for election for years thinking to save face only to be met with everyone screaming “Oh, you wanna play that game? Fine, we’ll primary EVERY ONE OF YOU.”

Well, thank goodness we got that “promise of a vote” in the deal. 🙄
Trump again claims that ACA is a “scam” and that the GOP will never vote in favor of it while announcing that the shutdown seems to be over soon.

Schumer: "I must vote no. I can not, in good faith, support this CR. ... Make no mistake about it, the American people know who is inflicting this pain on them."
He stops short of urging his colleagues to vote "no."

One of the talking points I keep seeing from Democrats is that part of the deal is that it will "ensure federal workers receive back pay" but that's the existing law!
That's not something you've won in negotiations. That's just the letter of the law. You don't get to claim that as a win.

Thank you!! The way I keep seeing people saying this as if it’s some sort of win, including Senator Kaine, are making feel like I’m crazy.
THAT IS ALREADY A LAW. TRUMP IS THE PRESIDENT WHO SIGNED THAT LAW. YOU ARE A FUCKING NEWS REPORTER

And it teaches Trump that the solution to any Democratic resistance is to inflict maximum pain on the population!
This is an iterated prisoners dilemma, and it’s so important to be mindful of the future incentives that they’re creating!

The Democratic redline for months has been funding Obamacare. Rs want the Ds to bail them out? Fine, fund the ACA. But *that's not in the CR*.
I feel like for years I've been yelled at for calling the ACA not good enough. Now the Democrats are just…giving up the ACA, so their planes aren't delayed?

How do so many democrats still not understand that the ACA *was* the compromise.

If Schumer votes AGAINST this but enough Ds vote FOR it that it passes, he needs to RESIGN immediately.
He will have shown himself to be absolutely ineffective as a minority leader. He has to go.
Literally resign tonight.
