NZ health workers were on strike today. They deserve huge pay rises. They work harder than politicians. They know huge amounts about their fields and are very well trained.

What’s the training for politics? Running a business into the ground?

17,000 healthworkers strike for the second time in a month
Mental health and public health nurses, allied health workers and policy staff will strike from 1pm to 5pm.

if you consider yourself a trans ally I really desperately need you to stop talking about the gatekeeping you have to go through to get puberty blockers like it's a good thing. it's not "checks and balances"—it's trans healthcare being held to a standard that no other care is held to

“This culture of repression leads to medical settings, given how disempowered patients are to protect themselves, being the place where coerced infection is perhaps most rampant”

No one should have to choose between care & Covid

But healthcare workers are denying the risk & patients pay the price
“… coerced infection—the complete lack of mitigation and the normalization of mass and repeated infection of a debilitating virus—is ubiquitous throughout society.“

I have specifically cut off the account name bc this is not a call-out of anyone:

WE DO. And we struggle all the more bc the women going through perimenopause and menopause forget us and talk over us.

Please stop erasing trans men/mascs in these conversations. It sucks.

20 minute train ride or 100¹ minute drive. Your choice.

¹ 40 mins to get off the motorway and then 60 mins to find a park.
'40-minute queues': Drivers warned to expect delays when IKEA opens in Auckland
In a "worst-case scenarios" there could be 40-minute queues to get off the motorway, and an hour wait to get into carparks at IKEA.

Govt committee that has 6 NACTFirst members and 5 opposition parties members votes in favour of law that advantages NACTFirst despite vast majority of public submissions being against it.

They aren't even subtle
This Bill could invalidate the votes of enough people to swing the next election in favour of the current government for no reason other than that they failed to fill out the correct piece of paper by the "proper" time (as defined by the people who benefit from the rule change).
Justice Committee recommends passing Electoral Amendment Bill with some amendments
The bill would prevent same-day enrolments, ban prisoners from voting, and tighten up the rules around treating.

Black Friday sales are tempting, but remember unions are calling for a mass shopping strike for national chains, esp. Amazon, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Starbucks, & Apple. If you shop between now & Dec 2, please support small & local businesses & avoid crossing the picket line 💪

Keep seeing a post reposted about an argument for AI being that "poor people deserve to be able to make art" and as a poor person who defied my family's wishes for me to be steadily employed and went $150,000 into debt studying art, you had better not even come near me with that bullshit.

Nature is wondrous
This is true of any ruminant whose diet is low enough in protein. There are videos on the internet of cows and goats casually snapping up baby chickens that happen to wander by. Ruminant molars are sharp enough to give you cuts like a scalpel, they can easily grind tiny birds.
When trapping small birds in nets for research, you have to get them out quick or the deer come and devour them.

Amazon in large part to blame along with corrupt local officials.

A long read and quite shocking.

This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:
