It's a reality TV presidency. Of course they want a film crew to show off ICE harassing citizens. They want to make sure everyone sees it so MAGA can cheer, and everyone else will be afraid. The optics are more important to them than the reality.

Also, anyone who had their expectations of science fiction set by reading Heinlein is going to conclude differently than someone whose expectations were set by reading Octavia Butler. I put up with all kinds of problematic things in scifi because I cut my teeth by reading all of Heinlein's books.

Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson's full statement, in which she says she will sign an EO permitting protest "only at the safety zone located at the ICE facility on Beach Street," is up on the village's website.

A mom in Houston reported her 15-year-old son with autism missing. She spent 6 days terrified, searching for him. The whole time, Houston police knew exactly where he was since they helped ICE place him in a refugee facility.

This is beyond cruel.

Yes! All these things. As someone who grew up very poor, all of these things are mysteries and the only clue I have is what shows up in the media. And media comes with the assumptions built in so there's never a "why" to it. I've been faking it since day one.

It's just implicit bias, only based on class, just like the race-based and sex-based implicit biases that pervade our profession and our nation.

As in the corpo world, I don't think this is intentional. It's about vibes. Those hiring have a class-based vibe in their head for a position that they don't realize is there. Candidates will give off a class-based vibe. If those vibes match they get hired, and if not they don't, even if qualified.

Thinking about it, I have made too neat of a structure. I don't know if there is a place that is open to working class. Even the circ clerks tend to be retired from middle-class jobs (teacher), or at start of adulthood looking for a m-c path, or doing a second job with their middle class job.
