Watching the 90's Pride & Prejudice series while also reading the book highlights how much work the producers put into crafting the story for television.

Every bit you 'don't' see in the book, but 'do' in the series is done so well, and always enhances the story. 💜

This!
"How to find things to hope for when things are hopeless" is a theme I keep returning to in writing, for pretty obvious reasons.
But that is not what Threads is for. The hope in Threads is "You better fucking hope this doesn't happen". That is the explicit message. Want anything else? Watch Fallout.
Threads director Mick Jackson has expressed worry over the upcoming remake’s focus on finding “hope even in the most challenging of times.”

“That one phrase worried me,” he tells Empire. “Hope is not part of nuclear war.”

I have book out with @titanbooks.bsky.social this year, so it'd be foolish of me to trash talk them.

But I can't help pointing out that not only does Fermi's Wake not have any giant crabs in it, but Europe's only Crab Museum officially refused to endorse it because of its lack of crabs.

100% correct, and also a great *investment* in future readers— I get real spooked thinking about young potential megareaders who don't have access to dirt-cheap piles of mass markets
hello this is the official petition to bring back mass market paperbacks!! mmpbs are good actually and everyone should do them!! i think esp romantasy readers would really love that shit! and you can still spray those edges!!! bring back mass market paperbacks thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dismissed because of jurisdictional confusion, it should be stressed, rather than any new revelation that would discredit the survivors of sexual assault who have come forward.

So I've noticed recently that I can no longer get an affiliate link for specific books on Amazon. Haven't done serious tracking, but sexy books especially seem impacted. Anyone else notice this?

Here's a feed of reliable comic book news sources on BlueSky! bsky.app/profile/did:...
When I was a kid, we had Wizard magazine.

Then Wizard died and we had CBR, Newsarama, etc.

Then came message boards.

Then social media.

Now, no one* knows how to market comics in a post-social media world.

*no one includes me.

I try very hard to emphasise the community hub aspect of the ethos we're trying to create at BF. So your thoughts, input and suggestions in this regard are really welcomed!

virtually all of the comics I’ve made has been with cartoonists who, for the most part, write for themselves; whenever an artist is willing to collaborate it’s a pleasant surprise simply because, again, they don’t “need” me to make their own stuff

one of many reasons alt comics are systemically superior to mainstream comics: the rarity of division-of-labor renders “who’s more important, the writer or the artist” discussions null and void; there are very few non-artist writers and we basically all agree that, duh, the artists can do without us

Also, it sucks how the UK became the driving force of stripping the last vesitages of privacy, security & anonymity from the internet using transparent BS about "protecting children" and it was Labor who carried this authoritarian scheme past the finish line.
Here's a login free link to this article, which is important for tje vast nimber of people who use discord for things besides gaming - like political organizing -and are being subject to this scheme to strip privacy leveraging age based censorship.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

If I was a pettier person I would start taking Ai covers and just reusing them at will for whatever. Memes. Journal covers. Wrapping paper. There’s nothing you can do about it.
I cannot stress this enough: court case after court case has ruled that AI does not count as an author when it comes to copyright. Any minute now an AI bot is gonna start reskinning and reselling AI slop and the "authors" will have zero legal recourse because they didn't actually author shit.

There is no race to “win.” You literally can’t win in publishing because it doesn’t have an end. It’s an ever-changing organism that is always mutating. The “winners” of today could be “losers” by next year and vice versa.
I had a six-figure deal one year. I’m crowdfunding for rent this year.

This!

Authority and context are at the heart of the web.
This is another reason why I think the information retrieval push, even pre-LLM, to shift from 10 Blue Links to retrieving contents, answering questions, etc. may be a mistake. We lose important things when we unmoor information from authorial & organizational grounding (and cites aren’t enough).
Sobering assessments from the just released NATO Stratcom brief on information risks.
