I have a theory, something I said on the podcast: it's no accident that the rise of the stalker romance (I can't even believe I'm saying that) happened when white authors stopped writing cops. These are basically surveillance state romances. The illusion that *being watched* makes you safer.

This!

The use of language. They'revnot illegaligrants unless their application is denies. Aplications for asylum have to be made in the country asylum seekers are applying to stay in.

Can't win, right?
also note the press release using "illegal migrants" and "asylum seekers" interchangeably

Okay, here we go.

Health & care staff are no longer allowed a Covid booster, but they're still expected to look after COVID+ patients.

NHS/govt is reneging on its duty of care. Staff will become unwell, and patients too will suffer.

You know what to do

This thread is terrifying.

As parents of a 6 yo in the UK, we're aware of some of the impact from wider discussions and are trying to work outba way forward to support our daughter.

She's a fantastic reader, and loves it, so we want to get her reading novels herself asap. Embedding it early? 🤷‍♂️
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

And I don't know if the answer is: everyone is too traumatized to do work and we need to reinvent society. Or if it's more like: generations are losing their cognitive abilities and willpower due to destructive technologies. Or: we all have post-viral brain damage. Or: all of the above.

Oh shit!
At this point, our intro comp/first-year English course has been so heavily revised, it no longer includes a novel, or "extended reading" of any kind, no "specialized" or "historical" reading, mostly in-class assignments, no research essay...and we are still seeing a 40-50% rate of AI misconduct.

Universities are assembling larger and larger teams to deal with academic integrity issues--mostly focused on AI--while simultaneously holding AI "writing" contests, AI-themed events, "hey, come play with these fun tools!" The messages are so mixed, it's criminal. Because AI is bloated with money.

This piece is phenomenal.

In addition to the contrast it draws b/t stories of power vs those of "the many", one of the most useful aspects to me is the contemporary "big tent"/diverse cast of heroes vs the totalized not-Muslim Other

#OtD 28 Nov 1985 a Shell report showed they knew that global heating was real, caused by fossil fuels, and that global temp and sea levels were rising and would rise further. Shell covered it up and began sponsoring fake studies to deny climate change stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1004...

Just on my way back from buying a bottle of wine in Millom for our Friday night, and came across an injured buzzard on the roadside. Had to turn around, pick it up and take it to the vets.

It seemed mostly stunned. Vets were lovely, and will let it recover before trying a flight test.

Small nuclear reactors. A fiction. A fantasy born of lobbying, fossil fuel intoxication, and a slavish addiction to ideas of growth.

James Bond, GI Joe, and most of the western news media of my childhood tried to convince me/us that the US & UK were the western epitome of free speech and liberty, fending off a censorious, repressive east that banned dissident ideas.

They lied.

Absolutely loved The House on Utopia Way!

If you enjoyed Only Forward or One of Us by Michael Marshall Smith, if you loved Jeff Noon's Vurt series, if late 90s sci-fi adjacent fiction is your thing, wrapped in a splash of Raymond Chandler-esque PI, then Stefan Mohamed has you covered.
I'm not convinced everyone wants to hear about my published books but what the hell

The House on Utopia Way! surreal sci-fi cyberpunk detective action! a "wildly imaginative ride"!

I told you editors were dangerous!!!

Just send Louise some editorial work to keep her off the play button, dammit!

During the piracy discussion yesterday, someone was like, I'm not a thief & you're mocking poor people.

Then, after being reminded of the existence of libraries, ended the conversation with a passionate insistence that they will continue to 'steal' whatever they wanted.

Case closed.
