Hi, I'm Hagai, I write comics and occasionally prose, and criticism thereof. Most of my comics can be read online for free, or purchased on a pay-what-you-want basis on Gumroad and Itch.io.

Always on the lookout for new collaborators, projects, and criticism outlets.

SIX HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX APPARITIONS OF KILLOFFER (English tr. Richard Lawson, Typocrat, 2005): if you’re going to make unpleasant-loser-confessional comics, at least have the decency to make them this forceful. Killoffer’s cartooning is a sight. One longs for more translations of his stuff…

You really don’t need to make this a bigger deal than it actually is.

“Traitor” is a new four-page comic written by me with art by @comicnerdsam.bsky.social. Here it is:

I don’t think this ecosystem where journalists are incentivized to keep political bombshell stories to themselves so they can score an eventual book deal is a good or healthy one

Continued my tradition of song-based commissions at Thought Bubble this year, with this gorgeous piece by @jennacha.bsky.social, based on “‘Til I Die” by the Beach Boys:

every now and then I remember this commission and go wow it’s crazy that this is just like in my house
Instead of just standard corpo-IP, I’m trying a new thing where I commission artists I like to do pieces based on songs I like, however the artist might interpret the vibe. Here’s one of the first pieces I got—Leo Fox, one of the best cartoonists right now, inspired by “Vesuvius” by Sufjan Stevens:

Weird to think so far in advance, but it's looking like *next* year's vacation will be longer than this year - Mountain Goats tour in October, Thought Bubble (presumably) in mid-November... hmm hmm hmm

HORTUS SANITATIS, Frédéric Coché (Fréon, 2000). I’ve remarked in the past that Coché is what all other ‘spiritual’ wordless comics want to be but can’t manage — beguiling, opaque, expansive. I can’t say I understand it, but I do find myself wanting to — more than I can say for a lot of other comics…

We will see a great many things… yes, I do believe we will.

“Going Up” is a new comic drawn by J. Marshall Smith and written by myself. You can read all of it below, or—if you wish to show your support—buy a high-res .pdf on Gumroad for a price of your choosing.
