The guardian then turned and began walking toward the door back inside, giving the daemon one last glaring look as he passed.
He ignored it and continued to stare her down instead, those blue eyes so light and intense. “Well?”
She shook her head. “Maybe I can try a squirrel instead.”
He scoffed. “You’ve been out here long enough.” He pivoted toward the castle and waved his hand for her to follow. “Come on inside.”
“Make me.”
Rio stopped mid-step away and looked back over his shoulder at her. “Excuse me?”

He raised the bottle, but Fox put a finger on it and gently pushed it back down. “I need your help with something.”
“Something real, or something to keep me busy so I sober up?”
“Ave, please.”
The look in her eyes made him put the cork back in the bottle. “What happened?” he sighed.
“It’s… complicated.”
“More complicated than everything else that’s happened lately?”
“Not really, I suppose. But messier. And more immediate.”
“Alright,” Av’ry groaned and dry-swallowed a palmful of willow bark. “If I can’t have any whisky, I am going to need some coffee. Immediately. Can we talk in the canteen?”
Fox nodded and they moved out into the tunnels.
After a moment, she cleared her throat. “I spoke to Iella’s widower last night.” She tried for casual but missed by a mile.
“Iella’s husband?!” Av’ry yelped.
“Yeah. He wanted to talk to me about D’arryd.”
“Why would he want to talk to you about the scout that poisoned you?”
“Well, he might be his son. And Iella’s son.”
“He’s your brother!?” Everyone in the canteen turned to stare as they walked in. Av’ry cleared his throat and slipped into a chair.
“Half-brother,” Fox corrected.
“Your half-brother is the one who poisoned you?” He lowered his voice.

A dark forest with the following text over it: God, her head ached, but not from hitting it like he had; it ached with the icy fear gripping her like jagged claws that they were lost. She shivered from it. “Fine,” she said, leaving out how miraculous that on its own was. She gingerly touched her split lip again. “Just cold and wet.”
Rio stepped into her path, and she almost walked right into him as something damp but warm slid over her shoulders. Kassidy stood holding a breath as he adjusted the heavy jacket over her, then turned without another word or waiting to see if she followed again.
Warmth. Despite how soaked it had been, it was relatively dry now and, most importantly, offered delicious warmth. It smelled like wet leather, earthy and pungent, but another scent, like smokey sage, filled her senses, too. She adjusted and pushed her arms through the jacket.
Her cheeks felt hot; the jacket must already be sparing her from the cold. “Thanks.”
“Your guardian might kill me if you freeze to death,” Rio muttered over his shoulder.

Kira squirmed, and Kassidy watched as Galen set down the girl of maybe four or five years old. She darted toward the group, running to Rio, who dropped to his knees, down to her eye level. She still had to tilt her head back to look at him, but she was grinning and wiggling her fingers.
Then Kassidy watched in stunned silence as the girl made gestures with her hands. First, she held up two fingers and then rubbed her pointer finger down the side of her palm. She held her palm up toward Rio and then herself, and—was she using sign language?
Rio watched her intently, following every hand movement she made. Finally, she put her hand on her chest and nodded, and he said, “I know, it was a really long time. Welcome back.”
Kira again moved her hands, eyebrows going up and down with exaggerated facial expressions, then clapped her hands together, nodding again.
Rio narrowed his eyes at her, cocking his head to the side. “No, I did not bring you back a present.”

Kassidy came to a stop two cautious steps away from Rio and frowned. “You went really far.”
His brow arched. “And?”
She shrugged, trying to look as casual as possible. “You were gone for a while.”
The corner of his mouth gave the slightest uptick. “Did you miss me?”
She felt her face get hot and goddamnit if her lights didn’t make it worse by fading to an orange glow, their reflection of them in his eyes like tiny embers. She denied it, “No.”
His grin widened, showing off one of his fangs, and it lit her up inside. “Liar.”
